UPDATED: JUN 20, 2014 draft @ schooltje + 660 ml bottle - pours murcky deep brown with a thin persisting beige head. Earthy aroma; nuts, raisins, blackberries, cherries, port and barrel. Medium body with perfect sweet sour balance and a salty finish. Flavour of plums, port and bourbon. Special beer, a bit between an Aardmonnik and a Supplication - had it over ten times now, and I should add points as this is possibly thé best Flemish Old Brown one could find actually - the subtlety of a burgundy wine, the complexity of the best red/brown sour and a slight vanilla touch of the bourbon... Struise just rocks... Best served at cellar temperature, even at room temperature this is the max!

50 cl. bottle split in half @ Kulminator. 2009 (which is the year they began aging & not the bottling year, peculiar way indicating the age that some Belgian breweries apply) Double Barrel Aged Flemish Oud Bruin aged for two years in Bourgogne and Wild Turkey barrels. Another new beer from Struise that quite interest me but this stuff is getting harder & harder to get more & more expensive especially with the reserve society coming up. Anyway soit… Pours surprisingly dark, blackish, very dark brown with a reddish hue with a mocha head on top. Not really what you would expect. Smell is highly impressive & might the first time since I seriously got into sours that I am digging sweetness in a sour beer, this is deliciously sweet with chocolate, candy, serious cuberdons here, lightly sours malts & sweet red wine flourishes. Taste is equally fascinating, sweet mocha, cuberdons, light sourness, red wine touches (I mistakenly thought this was bourbon & wild turkey so I didn’t pick up this one because I though, I had to), candy, cherry, quite a lot of chocolate, spices, light rye, red fruits & only lightly acidic, present light booze touch in the back in a spirit way, Wild Turkey I am guessing. Medium, slick, chocolaty bodied. Wow, very original & unexpected. I am highly curious what age will do with this beer, I am definitely guessing improving it. I don’t even like fresh Aardmonnik. I wonder if this will get sour, even possibly severely sour, wonder how it will taste then. Another highly fascinating & original new brew from these guys. Maybe one day, easier access etc. Prob. not. Also I like the black & white, partially old computer graphic(s (big pixels in the background) label.

Aroma di frutta secca e vino al palato sentore di frutta uva e finale di malti tostati.Versa un colore mogano e schiuma persistente.Bottiglia 2009 veramente uno spettacolo per il palato

Bottle courtesy of Alex. Thanks! This was a gusher. Pours dark brown color with off white head. Aroma is slight vinegar with some notes of oxidized wine and a touch of booze. Medium mouthfeel. The taste of this beer is outstanding. You get the flanders red notes in there. Then there are hints of wine barrel and a touch of whiskey mixed in just right. Awesome brew.

50cl Bottle - - - Gushing Alert - - - Dark brown color with a huge brown head. Nose: wild yeast, sour, some cherries, dark malts, chocolate, raisins, dark fruit, orange, spicy feeling, cuberdons. Oh this little baby has just a great complex nose! Taste: Cherries, dark to even slightly roasted. more cherries, but still very well balanced. Fruity character, dessert oranges, alcohol pepperness. Initially sour in the taste, some nice to even great sourness. but, this is corrected quickly, gains on body and finish. Wow, jusst a great "oud bruin"... really really nice... say no more.... One question left: how would this age ?

Aspetto: marrone scuro, schiuma abbondante, marroncino dorata, fine e decisamente persistente. Aroma: agrodolce, cacao e caramello. Intenso e delizioso. Gusto: buonissimo agrodolce, anche se non molto intenso. Si sentono anche abbondanti caramello e soprattutto cacao. Carbonizzazione e corpo. Buonissima birra!

Very dense & fien cream-coloured head over deep brown-chestnut beer. Mild lactic & fruity, with a roasted finish, just bitterish. Oranges again retronasal with an impression of orange-game sauce; vinous. Lipsmacking, if mild, acidity; medium bodied, and yet slick. Another Oud Bruin tour de force from Struise. Respect, Urbain!
