Maelstrom Double India Pale Ale is an unashamedly big bold American style badboy. Big ‘dank’ US hops such as Columbus & Warrior coupled with Simcoe and Centennial used in obscene quantities make for a huge smooth rolling hop hit underpinned with sweetness from the considerable malt body, both meet & mesh perfectly. A robust full on IPA, at the same time having finesse & poise. Once the aromas of pine, citrus & dank heavy US hops draw you in any chance of rescue has gone, you’re in the Maelstrom!

Okay orangey head and orangey-gold body, lots of carbonation. Aroma is heavy malt surrounded by sharp hops, peach and grapefruit, leichee, sharp tropical citrus. Flavour is heavy hops tempered by barley notes which makes it more like a pumpernickel bread finish that your usual super-citrusy hop explosion IPA. So a bit of good complexity there but I’m not entirely convinced they are working well together. No notice of the heavy booze so kudos to them for that. I think this would be an acquired taste as it’s a bit of a darker double IPA than I’ve found elsewhere.

En smag af, ja selvfølgelig humle og bitter frugt. Dem efterlader en meget tør smag i munden.
