Draft sample at the brewery. Pours a semi-cloudy amber color with a small off-white head. Notes of toasted and caramel malts, nuts, mildly spiced sweet bread, dried fruits (raisins, dates, prunes), and just a bit of earth. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a rich, malty mouthfeel. Very, very good doppelbock. Dogbrick (13993) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 1, 2012
On cask at MacNiven’s in Indy. The beer pours dark brown with a thin beige head that diminishes quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, coffee and caramel. Medium to full body with a roasty malt and coffee character and notes of dark fruits and caramel. The finish is sweet and malty. Above average overall. wnoble (1251) - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA - APR 6, 2012
Clear brown pour with a lastin ring of foam. Nose is bread, caramel, toffee, nuts, and roasted breads. Flavor is intense maltiness, caramels, toffees, rich nutty toasted malts. Surprisingly semi-dry in the finish but still nutty and caramelly rich. Even just a touch of bitterness in the finish. Medium full body and crisp carbonation. Enjoyable. Growler from the brewery. Dark brown with a fleeting ivory head that disipates to a thin ring around the glass. Rich malty aroma with a touch of fruitiness. Clean lager flavor with malt, toast, raisin, and prune notes. Smooth mouthfeel with low carbonation, full body, and a slight alcohol warmth. Tmoney99 (15034) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUN 1, 2010
Draft. Poured a clear dark brown color with an average fizzy off-white head that mostly lasted and good lacing. Moderate toasted malt and dark fruit aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted sweet flavor with a medium dark fruit sweet finish of moderate duration. Solid brew.

Sampled on tap at the brewery (Indianapolis, IN). Pours a nice murky brownish amber, darker, with red notes beneath, a frothy moderate offwhite near tan head. Laces ok. Aromas are a hearty malt base, caramel and biscuits, coffee grounds are lighter but there, a light floral hopping but fairly malt forward. Sweeter, a bit roasty. Initial is medium bodied, a darker malt sweetness, coffee essence, faint roast, caramel and toffee envelope. A bit sticky, sweeter, hops are died out, goes down easy but a bit full and thicker for sessioning. Nice, a little too sweet for me. A touch more hops would do it. deyholla (12439) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAR 29, 2010
Growler at the 2010 March Metro Detroit tasting. Poured a cleasr light brown with an off-white head. Aroma had a nice grain aroma, but it was a bit one note. Full of nice malt flavor, but again it was quite note. awiseman01 (469) - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA - MAR 24, 2010
Tap at MacNivens (while the keg lasts). Pours transparent ruby brown with 1-finger light beige head that fades in 5. Nose is relatively weak, but what’s there is faint red fruits and brown sugarish malt. Flavor carries much stronger than the nose. Lots of rich, full red fruit up front melded in a creamy balance with brown sugar/spice. Mostly smooth body with slight carbonation that creates a delightful mouthfeel IMHO. Just a few sips and the alcohol begins to take hold (or it could be I haven’t had dinner yet). Either way, very strong drink all around and very good. Now, where do I lobby for a Sun King Emporer RIS?
