COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First Waltz is the first of Sun King’s Specialty Beer Offerings. Both of Dave & Clay’s final beers at their last brewery were Imperial IPAs. Clay’s was a beer called Mohawk Red (in honor of once being reprimanded and told that a mohawk and shorts were not professional attire... WTF?) and Dave’s was called The Last Dance (in recognition of the end of his nearly 8 years at a busy downtown brewpub).

First Waltz is a West Coast Style IPA that was brewed with flaked rye to accentuate the spicy, citrus hop flavor of the Nuggets and Cascades used in it’s creation. The malt is more or less a conduit for the hops and this beer is double dry-hopped, both in the fermenter and again as it was kegged, giving it the freshest hop aroma possible.

Sampled from the tap at the 2010 Indiana WInterfest. Poured a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma had a nice combo of rye malts and citrus hops. Flavor began with citrus notes and then finished with a combination of pine and rye malt notes.

Cask Stillage from the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 24/09/2009 Grapefruit hop aroma. White head. Golden coloured a little hazy in appearance and very hoppy with a crisp and bitter malt finish.

Growler from Josh...aka..Stfun... Nice orange color, decent head. Aroma of pine and citrus. Flavor has a bitter orange juice taste... piney, mango and some fruityness. A strong malt backbone to balance it out. Unique DIPA... Overall I am glad this beer held up being in a growler for a week. Nice beer. Thanks Josh!

UPDATED: SEP 1, 2010 Fresh growler picked up and drank last night. Very solid, but not quite what I was expecting. Pours a nice murky dark orange, very cloudy. Aroma is bitter orange juice and grass. Flavor is juicy, full of orange, mango, grass, with some yeast in the background. No real hop bite or copper finish that I enjoy. A good and tasty beer, but not what I’d expect from a double IPA.

UPDATED: AUG 24, 2009 From what I gather, I got the first public serving of this one. Served from a firkin at HBG3. Pous murky as hell yellow orange, working on brown. The nose is that Juicy Fruit aroma that I love so much. The flavor is a mess of tropical flavors. A nice malty cutter. We have a long bitter finish. I want to revisit this when I find the regular draft version.
