500 ml can “2015 edition with Nelson Sauvin hops” bought at 7-Eleven in Lock Road, Tsim Sha Tsui.
Clear golden amber colour; Two finger head and soapy white foam which lasts for 90 seconds; Very good sticky lacing and notable sparing carbonation; Fairly fragrant aroma of malt, with very light red fruits, hint of dark fruits, soda, strong molasses, fairly strong bread, faint lemon and hint of grass; Mid to light sweet taste of light malt, with strong soda, very light red fruits, strong molasses, bread, lemon, light bitter hops and light sharp grass; Close to light body, Slick palate; Mouth feel is light but fair maltyness - certainly better than most lowly Happoshus - in a very slick and soda-ish background. The supposedly Nelson Sauvin is manifested in mostly red fruity backgrounds. Strong yeasty / white bread impression. Lemony hops to round. Not bad… Hoppiness is light red fruits, hints of dark fruits and thin lemon in nose, with stronger lemon and grass in taste. Bitterness is light but apparent for an abrupt, light astringent fruity-bready finish; Fairly dry after taste. Slick and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: To what extent a Happoshu can be improved? I say not much. This one is a valiant effort to jack up a useless style with slightly more malts and throw in bits of exotic hops - Nelson Sauvin for this year - Yes it still has that thin and awkward soda-ish Happoshu taste, albeit it has better and slicker body plus obvious bitterness. NS’ character is pretty low-fi to say the least, rather gimmicky. A drinkable Happoshu, but not really special.
Can, thanks to Ingo! Sampled on June 12, 2015. Marked 2015.10.futre7 (241) - Taipei, TAIWAN - MAY 2, 2015
Clear pale golden color, small white head. Malty sweet scent. Light bitter, malty taste. Fizzy mouthfeel, low bitterness.
Pours orange with some carbonation. Nose is orange citrus. Mouthfeel is dry. Overall it has citrus notes namely orange and some decent hops. Orange seems to be the abiding ingredient here. By no means a bad lager..but given its a Haposhu. It is very high end compared to its peers. yenbeer (188) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAR 10, 2015
I was liking the appearance and even the palate for a second, but the aftertaste is just so vile it kills the whole thing. About what you’d expect for a daisan. czlowiekwiadro (1063) - POLAND - APR 10, 2014
ładny, kwiatowy aromat, dość lekki, ale dobrze wyczuwalny. piany praktycznie brak, kolor jasno-złoty. w smaku dość słodki, kwiatowy, z lekką goryczką i dość wysoką słodowością. pozostawia lekki, roślinny, zielony posmak zaskakująco dobre piwo, głównie przez to, że dość odmienne od typowych koncernowych lagerów.

Shared by Mike at the Kyoto Craft Beer Festa 2014r. Super light gold, virtually no head nice hoppy flavor, pine cones, cactus? Basically this is fairly average but the hops are surprisingly strong nice stuff.

Can. Nose or lemon, corny grains, citra hops. Deep gold. Sweet, somewhat cloying flavor, grainy, with nice orange or lemon hop flavor. The malt character sucks, as expected, but the citra hops are making it reasonably decent. Definitely good for a third category beer.

floral, citrus, orange, sparkling, white foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, thin feel, abrupt. Pleasant aroma for a happsohu. Sweet but fleeting taste, bitter on the back end. In appearance and aroma this is kind of a trick on the drinker once it hits your lips. Brentv (680) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAR 20, 2014
From can. Pours a clear orange yellow with a thin white head and no lacing to speak of. Aroma is malt, caramel, and clean sweat. Taste is sweet, malt, caramel. Noticeable subtle hops. Palate is thin, with good but not excessive carbonation. Slightly sweet finish. The nicest of the pale lagers I’ve found in Japan. Enjoyed in Narita, Japan. maekchu (3997) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAR 19, 2014
Can from 7-11. Light sweetish malt nose, with some sewer. Bright pretty golden straw. Moderately harsh roast malt... and spirits. Thin body, a bit rough on the tongue. Not the worst thing on the shelf... but it’s still most decidedly happoshu. Waste of Citra hops.
