Pours black color with a thick off-white head. Roasty, a bit burnt even, malty aroma, some fruits and hops with faint licorice notes on the background. Flavor follows the same lines, maybe some ashy chocolate also. Quite smooth with low carbonation. Maybe not the most aggressive CDA but it has a good body and a nice soft bitter finish. Better than expected anyway.
22 FL OZ ($5.99) pretty good black IPA, tastes close to a porter. only IPA i could detect was in the aftertaste. very smokey tasting and almost overpowered the IPA aspect of the beer. not Surfs best but still a good beer. looks very good and dark and suds are nice and thick. madmitch76 (24807) - , Essex, ENGLAND - JUN 28, 2014

Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Leighton. Opaque brown beer, good pale tan head. Palate is airy and light with fine carbonation. The dark malts are not heavy but they are robust, bringing bitterness and dark chocolate. Piney hops, slighlty sweet. A bare whisper of citrus before a light dry finish. Bitter linger. Full on CDA.
Bottle shared in London - picked up in CA. Pours rich brown with a frothy beige head. Burnt toast in the nose, some toasty pine, dry cocoa, orange. Medium sweet flavor dry minerals, baking cocoa, burnt earth, wood, grapefruit, other citrus rind. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Nice dry edge on the finish, further minerals, scorched earth, grass, grapefruit pith. Solid, very drinkable. Nice one.

Bottle thanks to Leighton. It pours near black with a thick light tan head. The nose is pine needles, sherbet, roasted malt, orange peel and chocolate powder. The taste is bitter, roasty, toast, charred wood, earth, cocoa, pine needles, soapy edge and pepper with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Decent enough cda. 25 apr 2014, bottle. Dark brown. Nose is pine hops and burnt crust. Thin/med body, mildly creamy, mildly fizzy. Slightly meaty, bitter finish, dark toast all through. Not bad actually.

Charred wood, cocoa, floral and tropical fruit aromas and light vegetal taste in the background from a clear dark brown/orange body with a light tan head. More cocoa in the taste along with tangy grapefruit bitterness, then a dry, charred bite. The bitterness seems to build as you go, but there’s enough juiciness and dark chocolate sweetness to keep it in check. Finishes very dry and keeps it going on the tongue long after it’s gone. Very tasty black IPA. DedicatedToFun (4000) - Santa Monica, California, USA - JUL 24, 2013
Great IPA on tap at Venice Alehouse, lots of dark malts mixed with those delicious piney hops, very good. GT (10000) - San Diego, California, USA - JUL 24, 2013
Tap at Venice Ale House thanks to DedicatedToFun! Clear cola red pour with almost nitro looking tan foam. Big complete lacing. Nose is savory with soy, grilled apple, tootsie roll, mild butter, walnut. Slightly mealy palate with decent nuttiness and wicked walnut dry bitterness. No flaws. Medium body with very high IBUs. Rich, spicy finish.
