Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus. Very dark brown color with a nice dark red glare coming through when held into the light, medium sized light brown head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is malts, roasted malts, hops, fruit hops. Very well mixed, for me a perfect Black IPA has the roastyness of an Impy and the hoppyness of an IPA an D this beer has got it. In the aroma that is.... Taste is malts, hops, roasted malts, bitter, bitter hops, fruit hops. Very well balanced, perhaps a little bit too roasty bitter in the initial flavor instead of in the finish. But I’m gonna stop the wining, this is just a very good black IPA. Nice! dukeredhair (243) - California, USA - OCT 10, 2012
Bottle from whole foods Northridge. Aroma is citrus and pine hops with a nice strong malt roast bitterness and subtle hints of cocoa. Appearance is black with a tan head that laces nicely and linger long. Taste is bitter piney citrus hops with a nice stout malt background sweet roasty finish. palate is a bit more on the stout side than the IPA side but that’s fine w/ me. A really nice beer, great "black IPA" for end of summer beginning of fall since it stradles the line a bit more on the roasty stout side. From a bottle,a very dark red, roasty, white head, medium body, oily feel, average carbonation, this is a great black ipa. johndoughty (5446) - cheslyn hay, West Midlands, ENGLAND - NOV 14, 2014
Bottle. Black with a medium head. Some hops with a slightly bitter finish. Struck me as being a cross between a dark ipa and a stout. Lovely.

(Surf Black IPA) 650 ml bomber at home, served into a shaker, ABV 6.5%
Dark mahogany brown colour on the body, with deep ruby red shades when hold against the light. Head seems like a fizzy one during the pouring but eventually a tall and soapy beige head is forming, with very good retentin, eaving heavy lacing around the glass.
Aroma has plenty of chocolate notes even from the moment I opened the bottle, roasted malts, hops, citrus, grass, cocoa, lemon flowers.
Well balanced taste, with intense hoppy bitterness that breaks the initial malt driven sweetness. Flavours of chocolate, cocoa, citrus, light orange peel, lemon leaves/flowers.
Medium thin body, carbonation on good levels, mildly dry palate.
Very good. lusikka (7813) - Tampere, FINLAND - AUG 2, 2014

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a nearly pitch black colored brew with a one finger cream colored head. The head fades over a moderate amount of lime to leave a fair level of lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is heaviest of a roasted malt and semi-sweet chocolate smell. Mixed with these are some sweet caramel as well as a lighter floral and citrus hop.
Taste – The taste begins with a smoother roasted malt and chocolate taste. Hints of a caramel sweetness are up front which fade more over time as flavors of a pine and citrus hop begin coming to the tongue. The citrus remains relatively light while the pine gets stronger to the end, where a earthy hop joins the flavor to leave a moderately hopped roasted flavor are linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer has a medium amount of creaminess and a slightly lower level of carbonation. It is quite nice for the moderate hop level as well as roasted flavors of the brew as it creates a very soothing feel on the tongue.
Overall – A very tasty, rather moderately hopped, black IPA. It is a good blend of a black ale, with nice roasty flavor with hints of sweetness, and hop. fonefan (49293) - VestJylland, DENMARK - SEP 10, 2014

On tap at GABF 2012. Pours a almost black color with a medium tan head. A sweet nose of bitter chocolates and fresh hops. The flavor is really nice: pine, light bitterness, roast, char. Very smooth. Tasty.
