Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

Can thanks to badaxtro. Crystal clear amber pour with a cream head. Nose is resin, fresh, grass, piney, fruits, florals, and lightly sticky. Very smooth on the palate, uberfresh hops, florals, tropical fruits, delicious.

16oz canned 1/8/13. Appearance: crystal clear golden orange with minimal white head disappearing quickly. Aroma: tropical fruits, grapefruit, pineapple, floral notes, grass, pine and some sweet caramel. Taste: bursting throughout with hops; nice floral burst up front with the citrus grapefruit meat and pith bitterness coming quickly after then turning to dank, bitter pine all the way through to the aftertaste with some caramel malt peaking through right before the finish; crazy, delicious bitter. Mouthfeel: thin and smooth with medium carbonation. Overall: de-freaking-licious! Love the multi layered hoppiness. Malt shines through just enough to make it balanced enough for an "abrasive", tongue-scraping hop delight. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

16oz canned January 8, 2013, less than 2 weeks old...very nice! Served at around 45F.

Pours lightly hazy copper/amber with a two finger off-white head that leaves a ring of lacing and holds a light cap.

Aroma is pine, grassy, herbal hops, some grapefruit rind, a little dank & onion, a little musty, some bread and caramel malt. Good strength.

Flavor is big resinous hops, grapefruit rind, pine, some onion, big ass bitterness, some caramel malt, doesn’t do much against the, dare I say, abrasive nature of the bitterness here. Some alcohol, dry finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-plus bodied, oily, sticky, good carbonation.

Lives up to its name as far as the bitterness goes, and I like me a bitter bomb. A real treat to not only get to try this, but to get one that is very fresh. Big thanks to Mark!

At Big Beers, Belgians, & Barleywines Fest 2013. Clear golden with a foamy and thick off-white head. Huge hop aroma of grapefruit rind and floral+leafy wet hop tones. Flavor is almost sickly bitter, with a load of pine and grapefruit acidity, floral pollen...way too bitter with seemingly no balance, though there is a shadow of some caramel flavors trying to peek through.

Even better than last year, which was excellent. As a hophead, This ranks up there with the best available. Only wish it was available year round.

Can: The aroma consists of pineapple, mango, peach, and light grapefruit. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a two finger orange tinged off-white head that leaves lots of spotty lacing on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts very fruity with lots of pineapple, peach, and mango. The finish has moderate grapefruit and light orange. It’s medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, an outstanding Double IPA that is dangerously drinkable for 9%.

Out of can. Pours a Golden copper color with a white foam head. The grapefruit and Citris along with the hops is outstanding and just knocks you over. Has very good balance of bitterness along with sweetness of carmel malts. One of my favorites.

Got this beer from a friend that went to visit the twin cities over the holidays. He hit a home run with this one. I don’t know if it’s the cabin fever or the bordem on winter, but this double IPA get my blood pumping.

Can. Pours hazy gold/amber with thick, creamy white head; decent retention and spare lacing. Aroma is heavy dank and citrus hops, straw, grassy notes, biscuit and cereal malts, and light fruit. Flavor is fresh dank hops forward (medium bitterness), citrus esters, lightly sweet malts, and grassy notes; fresh hoppy bitterness from start to finish. Medium body and low carbonation.
