Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

500mL can, sent from khoffman43 (thanks a lot, Kyle), pours a fairly clear golden orange with a medium off-white head. Aroma is packed with piney hops, biscuity malts, a little grapefruit and some residual sugar. Flavour brings out a wallop of herbal, piney and grapefruity hops, biscuity malts, a touch of caramel, and some juicy citrus fruitiness on the finish. A nice big, moderately juicy hop bomb without any undesirable astringency. Quite a unique hop profile that works exceedingly well. Well-balanced and highly drinkable. Excellent stuff.

A: The beer is amber in color with great clarity and a massive cream colored head on top which sticks to the edge of the glass. S: A hop bomb if I’ve ever smelled one! Very reminiscent of Sculpin’s aromas. A ton of tropical fruit, especially pineapples and mangos along with plenty of juicy citrus. No malt to be found. T: The sweet tropical fruits are really the main attraction here as well. The pineapple and mango provide a nice sweetness, along with some peaches. There is plenty of juicy grapefruit and pine on the finish to give the beer a great bitterness. M: Medium in body with a low to moderate carbonation and a really crisp finish to the beer. D: I say it everytime I have a Surly beer, and I’ll say it again: awesome! These guys really have a good thing going and I’m glad to have some more of this one in the fridge.

Can from Guerde. Thanks guy! Depending how it’s held, it poured amber, copper or ruddy copper. The head was substantial and foamy. The hop aroma could anesthetize a pachyderm. The flavor starts resin, goes floral and permits a little malt to seep out. The finish is harshly, scratch that, abrasively bitter. Damn it’s good.
