One of the cleanest IPAs I’ve ever had. Floral notes followed by mellow hops. mnurda (1285) - Winnipeg, Manitoba, CANADA - APR 27, 2011
Canned sample from Blue Max Liquors Perfect colour, taste, carbonation, hops, citrus, etc... Would have given it a five but felt bad giving two in two weeks motorhed (10) - Maple Grove, Minnesota, USA - APR 15, 2012
Tasting from a can on 1/14/12. Canned 12/14/11, poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass.
A: Appearance is cloudy copper with a tanish head. Light levels of lacing throughout the tasting.
S: Where do i start? Smells like pine, grapefruit, big on hop aroma. Overall, smells intense like a big DIPA should. Reminds me of Maharaja.
T: Grapefruit, pine, citra (?) hops, and tangerine. Get a little bit of the alcohol on the finish but just enough to know it’s there.
MF: Medium mouthfeel with lower levels of carbonation (maybe felt that way due to the high ABV?) and a drier finish. Smooth.
O: This is one of my favorite Surly brews and DIPA’s in general, i’m very fortunate to be able to find this locally. I cant help but compare it to Avery Maharaja which i think is fairly similar in style and complexity. I remember taking down a couple of growlers of this stuff with friends when it was called 16 Grit. Have loved it ever since. I’m glad i only have 11 more in my cellar to finish up. =)

8oz pour from a cask tapped by Omar himself minutes ago. Brilliant all around with one hell of a nose. Extra pound of hops in the cask. Dang it all. This review sucks, but the beer is epic.

Poured from a can on a trade with our new friends met at Surly Darkness Day dated January 9th 2015 into a Surly Brewing snifter a deep golden with a heavenly pillow top head.
Aroma is flat out locker room BO (u know it) with a twist of citrus. DAMN!! Love this even if I never take a sip.
Flavor is sweet & juicy citrus with a uber resin finish.
Perfectly balanced. In my top 5 DIPA--no top 3. And gratefully I have had some slam good DIPAs in my drinking career. They hit this one RIGHT ON!
Overall this brew is above outstanding. MetalNHopHead (1976) - Lincoln, Nebraska, USA - NOV 12, 2016
About goddamn time this showed up in my state. The can shows a disembodied hand operating a sander and casting sparks. That’s more or less the effect this beer has on your palate. It pours pale orange. The hop aromatics are citrusy, piney, malty, and floral. The caramel malt holds the resinous hops at bay until it gives out at the end. Pineapple, orange, grapefruit, lemon, and pine needle flavors. Things don’t get truly Abrasive until the finish. That’s when the full force of the 120 IBU’s hit you. This is just the sort of masochism that I like. trail_and_ale (43) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - JAN 3, 2011
I had the pleasure to share a 4-pack with friends on New Year’s, and we were all left clamoring for more. Lovely orange color and perfect head with an assault of hop aromas, with pine and citrus at the forefront. A stinky hop-bomb dream. The citrusy, hoppy flavors from start to finish made my finish to 2010 a night to remember. urge13 (17) - Overland Park, Kansas, USA - APR 14, 2011
From 16oz Can poured a beautiful orange amber, The smells are like a tropical fruit salad. Pineapple, mango and orange. All these tastes pop right out as well, a sweetness with balanced with floral hops. No to much burn from the 9%, just an amazing beer. Makes you want to live in Minnesota.
