Deep brown body with a khaki head. Slightly musty with caramel and dough. Hints of yeast and milk chocolate. The taste is cola and dark chocolate. There is a subtle roast. Well done and very smooth. Pours a deep brown with a big head & great lace.
Aroma is a little nutty & peaty with some fruity hops.
Plenty of minerality, some peat, a bunch of leafy hops and a bit of big bitterness..
Weird & also great
8 oz. pour, on tap at Surly Beer Hall. Consumed on 5-30-16. Labeled as merely "Viking Ale," but confirmed with bartender it is Asator Viking. Medium brown with an amber hue. Hazy. Bubbles rise at moderate speed. Moderate amount of long-lasting, light tan head. Looks good. Surprising, smoky aroma. Burnt hot dogs scent. Woody; charcoal. Dry from both the smoked malts and hops. Smell is strong and overall good but a bit too strange to justify a top score. Dry, toasted, lightly roasted, lightly smoky flavor. Smoke is more subtle in flavor than aroma. Actually really quite tasty. Dark chocolate on graham cracker roasted over charcoal. Frothy. Light to medium body. Fine but ordinary palate. Tasty beer with memorable aroma. Nothing special by Surly standards but a darn good beer overall. Smokiness could stand to be stronger in the flavor but if anything is a bit excessive in the aroma. On tap at Varsity Theater. This is a pretty interesting beer. Probably good for the style but not my favorite style. I would rate it the #1 Viking beer I’ve had. Deep murky ruby color with thin khaki head. Medium body with low carb. Very smoky, peaty taste. Taste is more akin to smokes porter than IPA. Good beer for a novelty but not sure O would choose it over the other great Surly offerings available. dresden (1581) - Saskatchewan, CANADA - JUN 6, 2016
I think this is the beer, describe as Viking beer. Mahogany and a bit murky, big peat and light smoke aroma. Would never describe this as an ipa, but good nonetheless.
