Oh keg at Magic Rock Tap, Rainbow Project 2015. Is this retired, really? I enjoyed this. Has a nice vanilla ice cream thing going on. Slight red chili aftertaste, bitter dark chocolate. Slight whisky presence - bourbon and a little peat. Super duper head retention for any impy stout, leaving a small dark brown soy-sauce looking head around the rim. Everything seems to achieve a really harmonious balance, with no one flavour dominating. You really want to live in it. ansalon (3793) - Stockholm, SWEDEN, SWEDEN - AUG 18, 2015

Pours black with low, thick tan head. Aroma of molasses, dates, bourbon, vanilla, coffee. Taste is sweet, creamy vanilla and chocolate, light coffee finish. Body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation. Dr_MedievAle (214) - Alabama, USA - NOV 25, 2014
on draft at blackstone in iowa city.
really unimpressive barrel aging by surly, here. on the nose is light charcoal and some floral hops, roasty malts. appearance is fine -- not the darkest of motor oils but with a nice brown head. tastes of bitter flowers, some spruce, bakerís chocolate, and a flavorless bourbon burn. not much barrel presence at all.

Since they combined the previous barrel aged listing with the 2014 bottled, Iíll rate the BA draft at Darkness Day here. Has the complexity of the non BA version, but more molasses, oak, and a sherry note from the bourbon. Thick and a long lasting finish thatís not too sweet. For my taste, I preferred the non BA version better, but this is one hell of a beer. mnmike (1086) - Minnesota, USA - FEB 13, 2013
On tap - the bourbon aging really adds to Darkness in my opinion. Still fairly sweet and now with the added complexity of wood and bourbon. alpar (160) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JUL 8, 2012
Had at ABR, smells sweeter than the original and the barrel is definitely present. Taste is rich and a little ashy. Super smooth and full of dark fruits and some whiskey. Definitely nice but was expecting something a little different. Hopefully I get a chance to revisit this someday.
