UPDATED: MAR 5, 2010 Sampled at GTMW 2009. First of all, I must comment on what a clever name Surly has come up with for what I assume is their 4th anniversary beer. Pours dark yellow with a foamy off-white head. Sour lemony citrus aroma. Lightly tart, bretty taste. Quite pleasant. I could drink a lot of this...I was wrong, Surly has a separate beer called Four that was the 4th Anniversary Beer. TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - AUG 10, 2009
Sampled at GTMW 2009 (Madison, WI). Pours a hazy golden hue, thick and luscious thick offwhite head that laces exceptionally well. Aromas are barnyard funk, horseblanket, nice fruitiness, apple, pear, with slight Belgian spice. Initial is full and flavorful, fruits over funk, apple and pear work into funky horseblanket, belgian spice and sugar. This is very nice, with a funky brett and a sort of sour tang. Finish funky, fruity, light bitterness. I didn’t view this as a sour so much as more of a Saison. I enjoyed this a lot. Fruity and bretty, with light sourness. A light, malty aroma with just a faint sourness. Yellow color. Very easy drinking and mildly sour, more of a berliner weisse level of sourness and appearance than a lambic or flemish style sour.
