Great Taste, 2009. This was pleasant, but I wasn’t blown away by the complexity. Having enjoyed One, Two, and Three earlier in the day, I had high hopes for Four. It certainly was refreshing with the brett. It too me drank more like a saison though than a sour ale. Notes of peach, lemon, pineapple, and grass. Nice, but not exceptional compared with other beers that day, or even against the other beers Surly brought.

Hazy yellow pour with white head, aroma is tart and sweet. Taste up front is lemon zesty and a bit tart, and then goes into the Brett yeast that is funky and unpredictable. Not a huge fan of Brett beer, but this one wasn’t bad.

Pours a hazy golden with thick white head. Aroma is tart. yeast and lemon come across. Flavor is citrus yeast with a bit of a sweet undertones. A little spice. Body is light and crisp.

at GTMW ’09. so you brew a beer to lure brett farve, he doesn’t come, you release it at great taste and a few weeks later, he arrives. have fun with the old man who threw the most interceptions in the league last year. GO BEARS! pours hazy gold with white head. nose is floral and fruity. flavors are slightly sour, sweet bread, bretty and floral finish.

Lots of yeast in the aroma, and it is immediately recognizable as brett. Some prairie grass as well. Dry flavor with minimal hops, and more yeast here as well, which gives it horseblanket quality, but it is not sour at all. Cloudy yellow appearance. An OK beer, and it might improve with age if it wasn’t draught-only.

DalzAle (2038) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - SEP 13, 2009
Growler pour on the pedal pub at the autumn brew review. Hazy brownish yellow color with plenty of carbonation. Flavor was slightly creamy and funky yeast and finished with a little sour apple and actually paired really well with the over-salted pretzel it was served with. Not a bad beer, but I was hoping for something a little more assertive.

Tap, Autumn Brew Review 09. Pours a hazy pale yellow color, medium head. Flavor is slightly sour, brett is more prominent. Grainy on the palate. Dry finish. Simply OK, nothing mind blowing. With some work, this could be a decent brew.

Sampled during Great Taste of Midwest 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a hazy golden straw colored brew with an average white head that slowly dissipates to a cream top. Aroma of citrus, some light horse blanket and barnyard funk, some pear and Belgian yeast. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of some tropical fruit with citrus, yeast and some earthy spices. Finish is slightly tart and metallic that slowly disappears. Ironic Surly called this one Brett Favre a week prior to Favre signing with the Vikings. But in the brewing sense, a noble attempt at a brett saison.

Sampled at the Great Taste 2009. Heard about this beer and at first I thought I’d miss it because the New Glarus cheese pairing was scheduled around the same time. But the NG cheese event was full by the time I arrived, so I did get a chance to sample. A nice beer and obvious Brett and light tartness. Fruity flavor similar to a saison. Alright by me, though I don’t think it would be the first Surly I’d have if I had to choose.

gtmw09.... poured a cloudy orange brown with a frothy just off-white head... very assertive citrus and tropical fruitiness that i generally find in a lot of the saisons i enjoy....flavors continued in a similar manner. tropical fruits, pears with light sweet barnyard effects. sort of like a funked-up saison with less emphasis on the funk.
