COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
From the blackest depths of the brewhouse comes Damien, Child of Darkness. Spawned from the usually discarded remnants of Darkness, Damien is a dry-hopped black ale. Flavors of roasted malt and dark brown sugar suffocated by aromas of tangerine and pine.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2016 Another solid beer from Surly. This ones not too hoppy more malt forward. Burnt toffee, oak, some mild citrus hops. Goes down easy for the style.

Compared to Surlys usual level of hop aggression, Damien is a pretty smooth beer. Darkness is on the horizon for me, but I havent tasted it yet. Still, the fact that its mere leftovers can tame hop bitterness by the likes of Surly definitely says something about the brews strength. Thats not to say there isnt a hop presence. There is. Pine and citrus notes in the flavor and aroma. Mainly, though, theres a lot of bittersweet chocolate and dark fruit flavoring. Feel is creamy yet not as heavy as some of the overcharged Black IPAs. Hey, the greatest sins are ever so inviting.

Tap at Golden Nugget Minnesota. Pours out pretty much black with a small white head. Aroma is of some roast, coffee, dark chocolate, light bitterness. Taste is solid, pretty much a dumbed down darkness. Burnt roasty malts, light coffee, chocolate, licorice, molasses. Pretty solid, definitely flavorful.

750 mL bottle. Pours black with an ample khaki head. Smells of nutty and lightly nutty malts. Tastes of light roasted malt. A little creamy with some very light chocolate. Just a bit of pine hops. Really not a very dynamic flavor. Light body. Kinda boring. Not a black IPA, really. I know its not supposed to be a heavy beer, but this is pretty watery and bland.

Black. Sweet, green pine with molasses and light roast. Brown sugary molasses and sweet pine with faint roast.

Pours very dark brown with lasting chocolate milk head and good lacing. Aroma is very nice, with sweet lactose, dark fruits, roasted malts, chocolate. Taste is lactose milk stout up front, remaining approachable as the hops and carbonation make a dent, a hint of coffee, then finishing sweet and roasty. Overall its light and drinkable. Not bad, not amazing, not quite worth its bomber premium, although it is a full 750mL.

750ml bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee in a Sam Smith pint glass. Smells of milk chocolate, warm milk, plums, raisins, caramel, vanilla, soy sauce and wet earth. Pours the color of new motor oil with two fingers of pillowy head and a trace of carbonation on the sides of the glass. Rich lactic caramel and vanilla up front, followed by medium-roast coffee with a hint of ripe fruit mid-palate and a lingering cafe au lait finish. Astonishingly light- to medium bodied, creamy, slightly sweet and mouth-coating. A fascinating brew. Its not Darkness to be sure, not even something Id say that aspires to be Darkness, but rather something surprisingly light and balanced for a dark beer, with vague hints and traces of the deep rich sinfulness that Darkness is. I like it. I like it a lot. Its certainly a lot cheaper and a lot easier to open than those wax-sealed Darkness bottles. Thanks again Surly!
