Smells like a imperial stout, but tastes like a black ipa.
Nice beer Travlr (25854) - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA - MAR 11, 2016
Draft at the source. Black color, big beige head. Aroma of one and burnt espresso. Taste has huge roast, bitter coffee, bitter pine finish. Very tasty. saltyseadog (72) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - OCT 14, 2016
750ml bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee in a Sam Smith pint glass. Smells of milk chocolate, warm milk, plums, raisins, caramel, vanilla, soy sauce and wet earth. Pours the color of new motor oil with two fingers of pillowy head and a trace of carbonation on the sides of the glass. Rich lactic caramel and vanilla up front, followed by medium-roast coffee with a hint of ripe fruit mid-palate and a lingering cafe au lait finish. Astonishingly light- to medium bodied, creamy, slightly sweet and mouth-coating. A fascinating brew. It’s not Darkness to be sure, not even something I’d say that aspires to be Darkness, but rather something surprisingly light and balanced for a dark beer, with vague hints and traces of the deep rich sinfulness that Darkness is. I like it. I like it a lot. It’s certainly a lot cheaper and a lot easier to open than those wax-sealed Darkness bottles. Thanks again Surly! gopherfan99 (2000) - Minnesota, USA - NOV 12, 2016
Tap; pours black with a beige head; aroma of roasted malts, pine, coffee, and hints of citrus; taste is more bitter than sweet with roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate with hints of brown sugar and citrus; finish is bitter with some pine notes Obfuscate (593) - Minneapolis, - NOV 19, 2016
UPDATED: NOV 20, 2016 Another solid beer from Surly. This ones not too hoppy more malt forward. Burnt toffee, oak, some mild citrus hops. Goes down easy for the style.

Aroma is pine, dark malts and uniquely perfumed. The flavor is earthy/dark malts, grapefruit, citrus and a mix of dryish and bitter/tart in the finish. kathouse (1932) - LAS VEGAS, Nevada, USA - NOV 27, 2013
This does not remind me of a black IPA, but is certainly respectable. Deep chocolate aroma. Medium full body with good hop flavor to counter the porter style malts. Finish is warm and bittersweet. Nice. saxo (19357) - Højbjerg, Aarhus, DENMARK - MAR 11, 2016
