UPDATED: DEC 31, 2012 ’11 vintage from my pal Ryan. Poured into a Darkness tulip pitch black with huge foamy tan head. Medium’ish thinner body than i was expecting. This was all double rich chocolate. I love sweet but this was way too rich for me. Good, but the sweetness is abit overwhelming at least this time. Update- ’12 vintage. Less syrupy and sweetness, more hoppy much better.. Maybe I got a bad bottle.

Bomber into snifter. Medium lacing. Aroma of licorice and chocolate and tastes of those as well. Very smooth. A bit of raisin in the finish and then cherry as it warms. No hint of the 12% at all. Lives up to the hype.

2012 Bottle from my 2014 Secret Santa, finally opened at a share. Pours black, with a quick, bubbly, beige head. The nose is striking and assertive. Milk chocolate, maple syrup, basil, caramel, bread, and vanilla. Very sweet flavor, with a relatively heavy bitterness, making it startlingly balanced. Very heavy body, with a smooth, effervescent, sharp, and thick mouthfeel. This is an amazingly well done stout. Tons of character, and great balance. The years seem to have been very friendly.

Alkohol: 9,6% obj.

Kolor: Czarny, nieprzejrzysty.
Piana: Piękna, wysoka, beżowa, nieprzeciętnie trwała piana. Cały czas utrzymuje się nad piwem. Całe szkło okala szeregiem pajęczynek. Klasa!
Zapach: Dość klasyczny, ale całej całkiem fajny aromat. Dużo ciemnych owoców, mleczna czekolada, melasa, cukier trzcinowy. W drugim rzucie karmel, nawet odrobina wanilii i intensywna kawa. Ten aromat kawy z dodatkiem karmelowo-waniliowego syropu wraz ze spienionym mlekiem coraz bardziej zaczyna o sobie dawać znać. Ładnie i przyjemnie ;)
Wraz z ogrzewaniem trunku w dłoniach ten chmielowy, żywiczny posmak coraz to mocniej dawał o sobie znać, nawiązując odrobinę do stylu Black IPA. Pokazała się również nieznaczna paloność. Tekstura umiarkowana do gęstej.
Angażowałem w to kumpla w US, który kupił mi tę buteleczkę.

Alengrin (5718) - BELGIUM - OCT 11, 2017
UPDATED: OCT 12, 2017 Surly's claim to fame, a very highly acclaimed imperial stout I had in some special bottled edition a few years ago, but this rating concerns the regular version - which makes it sound all too trivial, which this beer very obviously is not. Yellowish beige, thick and creamy, stable head over an opaque black beer only showing warm mahogany edges in the end. Stunningly beautiful, intense bouquet with its own twist compared with many other American style imperial stouts; impressions of chocolate sauce, black cherry jam, toffee, dried blueberries, walnut oil, cured meat, black coffee, shoe polish, butterscotch, whisky. Sweet onset with again this idiosyncratic, yet beautiful, bit spicy black fruit presence of black cherry essence or blackberry coulis, balanced by a cured meat-like umami accent and some light sourishness; medium carbo, thick and syrupy, oily mouthfeel, thick body of chocolatey and intensely toffeeish malts, very clean, long and complex, warming finish, bourbon-like booze, just a tad astringent in the very end, matched with a peppery hop bitter note. It's easy to see why this beer is such a celebrity and a tasting glass from this fresh bottle of the regular version charmed me even more than that special vintage edition of it which I had a couple of years ago. If the alcohol didn't carry just a tad too much tiring wryness in the tail, this would have been even closer to a perfect score for me.
