Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Pours a rich golden color. Smell is sweet and malty. Taste is crisp, malts, grains, a touch of sweetness. Overall this is a refreshing beer great in the summer.

Lots of depth and character. Looks sexy in a glass. Smooth and bready up front, mild bitterness on the finish. Lasts a long time on the palate. Good stuff but at a price

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2017 Can. It poured a hazy dark yellow with a nice white head that had good retention. Nice malty aroma with some hop bitterness in the taste. Fairly clean finish. Very nice lager.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2017 As far as lagers go, this is absolutely the top of my list. Really nice malt with an easy bitterness. Perfect for sipping in the summer.

Pours a slightly hazy, yellow from the can with thin white head. Aroma of bready malt. Taste is clean, overall decent, leaves some bitterness

On tap in a large lager glass. Light colored and light bodied. Flavor is crisp and light. Well crafted. I think this is a little more like a German pilsner than a Helles, but that’s a fine distinction. Not a bad beer, but also not a lot of flavor here (but not surprised).

Very mild malt flavor with a bit of an overwhelming hop flavor on the finish. Would be a good beer for those who like hoppy lagers. I would like to see the beer a bit more balanced.

BeerandBlues2 (13695) - Escondido, California, USA - JUN 14, 2017
Draught at the brewery. Pours clear gold with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is moderate Pils husky and grainy malt with medium earthy and spicy hops. Flavor is moderate Pils grainy and husky malt with light earthy and spicy hops and bitterness and a dry finish. Medium-light body and moderate carbonation.

Pale yellow pour. Some floral aroma notes. Taste is sweet malt and some grains. Definitely more bitter than most helles. Some earthy notes as well. Very good overall

Pours clear yellow with a white head. It has clean pale malt and light herbal hops. It has a medium body with mild carbonation. The taste is simple, clean and delightful. Nice German hops stick around.

Minneapolis, Mn - Target Field - Twins Game - 16 oz can, Pours a slightly sparkling, light golden with a thin white head, Aroma is buttery with hints of olive oil. Flavor has some of the same accents with some salty notes. Crisp grassy finish. Decent mouthfeel. Decent Helles, good representative of the style.
