May 16, 2013 - on tap at AV Old Chicago. Brownish red pour with limited head. Aroma was malt and grain. Taste was consistent with aroma with some roast and maybe wood. Light to medium body with some carbonation.

Not my favorite offering from Surly, but also really not my style of beer. I have ordered more than one of this beer though as it is only available seasonally and I will most likely get another next year. On tap at SPSBF. Pours a clear deep red with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has some dark grains with a bit of smokiness and a backing earthing oak note. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is light and roasty with chocolate and bready notes. Flavor is raosted malt, chocolate caramel, hints of coffee, dark fruits, and spices. This beer is named after the german word meaning 'pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.' Ahh those wacky Germans! This beer is a fun change of pace from the hops war. Malty, a bit sweet, easy to drink. What more could you ask for sitting outside on a perfect Minnesota day?

On tap at Busters. Pours clear red brown with a quick off white tight soapy head that fades. Aroma is malty a little burnt and a subtle sweetness like honey or roasted plum. Taste has subtle bitterness and roasted malt with a woody fruitiness. Palate is slick and sticky with a drying finish. Very easy drinking and enjoyable!
