On tap at Joe’s Place in Iowa City. Arrived in a pint glass.
Appearance: A deep reddish-brown with coppery tones, capped with a somewhat beige head less than a finger thick, which dissipates rather quickly.
Smell: Caramel, toffee, some faint traces of oak, and a bit of walnut / pecan wafts out of the glass.
Taste: Superbly malty, this is a a festival of caramel and toffee, buoyed up by some notes of pecan and walnut. Here and there, slight traces of fruit appear, like a green apple. The finish is primarily toffee and nuts.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, on the light side of medium-bodied, and with just enough carbonation to not feel flat.
Overall: I enjoyed this dunkel. Will repeat. kbutler1 (1381) - North Carolina, USA - APR 29, 2011
Draft at Stub & Herbs. Poured into a pint glass a dark brown color with a ever so slight head. What head there is collars around the rim of the glass a light tan color. I would have liked more head but it seems the bartender wanted to fill it to the brim! The aroma is actually quite mild with notes of light roast coffee. Medium mouthfeel. I would guess this uses maris otter barley given the appearance and aroma. Medium mouthfeel. Starts off with a very slight dark fruit flavor, a touch nuttiness, and the aforementioned light roast notes. Sweetness sticks around the whole time. Mild bitterness. Some caramel flavors as well as it warms up a touch. VERY easy drinking. Like. andyhwcinc (1884) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 30, 2011
Enjoyed as a guest draft at Dark Lord Day at 3 Floyd’s in Munster, IN. Appearance a coffee brown with a rich tan head. Aroma honestly like smoked malts and meat, like beef jerky. Taste is fantastic, really creamy but crisp at the same time, a bit of roasted and smoked malts, a bit of German lager yeast as well. One of the most complex lagers I’ve had. Very good. evanlarkin (307) - Northfield, Minnesota, USA - MAY 4, 2012
Got this from Loring Kitchen & Bar at the release party.
Pours a deep ruby with minimal white head. If you hold it up to the light, you can see that it’s very clear. The aroma is mildly woody, with some hints of molasses hiding behind an otherwise bready character. The taste is malty, lightly toasted, and very oaky. Some vanilla comes through, as well as a nice caramel character. Clean finish. It’s a subtler beer for Surly, but quite good. Obfuscate (571) - Minneapolis, - APR 12, 2015

On tap at the Fountainhead, Chicago. Smells warmly malted and toasty, like a malted milk ball hovering over Rochefort 10. Flavor is unassuming at first, slightly fruity and quite bready malts riding a medium and refreshing dunkel body. Slightly oily right after the swallow, this settles into a long and pretty subtle oak finish, getting woody and dry very slowly with a lingering trace of vanilla throughout. The wood is not overdone at all, which is surprising considering the style of beer carrying it. Very smooth and drinkable, I’m sure this would make an awesome food or cheese pairing if done right. fear025 (213) - Downers Grove, Illinois, USA - AUG 20, 2010
On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL.
Aroma:The smell is rather subtle, but I get dark malts, and noble hops.
Appearance:This beer is dark brown with very little head.
Taste:Dark malts dominate this beer. The foretaste has a lot of chocolate, and also some woody notes. On the mid to aftertaste I get some subtle dark fruit flavors. The aftertaste lingers with a mild lager yeast flavor.
Palate:Medium body that’s really smooth. Good carbonation.
Overall:I really enjoyed this beer, it’s very drinkable, and goes great with food. I’m not sure it’s exactly spot-on in terms of style though. I think it could have benefited from more complexity.

Not my favorite offering from Surly, but also really not my style of beer. I have ordered more than one of this beer though as it is only available seasonally and I will most likely get another next year. Has good flavor to it and overall drinkability is fair. arnold931 (1263) - Iowa, USA - APR 25, 2014

Poured on tap red, amber, blush, smells of malt, spices, has a crispy/toasty note as well. Tastes of malt/toast, finishing clean and smooth with a pleasant warming aftertaste
