EBF NOTB. Aroma is smoky, chalky roasted, and chocolate. The flavor is the same, with the wood, roasted malt and chocolate coming together nicely. This stood out as being better than many others at the event. EricE (1372) - Seattle, Washington, USA - DEC 14, 2010
Thin black pour with a light tan head. Lightly smoked aroma. Smoky roasted flavor with a bitter finish. Very nice and drinkable. I didn’t realize this was 9.5%. UncleKorm (1337) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - NOV 21, 2015
Waxed bomber poured a dark brown hue w/ large tan head. Big smoky aromas. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a light bitter finish. Tastes are smoked bacon and toast. Full bodied.

Got this one in a trade a brought it to Sourfest. Porter dark pour with tan head. Nose is roast malt and light smoke. Taste is sweet and woody and malty. Was pleasantly suprised at how the smoke was NOT overpowering. Very nice. Nightfall (1307) - Hamburg, GERMANY - JAN 16, 2012

On tap at FoBAB ’07. Dark black/brown with rubiness and off-white head. Rauchy, smoked aroma. Smoked, meaty and malty flavors. Thin to medium body, no carb. Tasty smoked beer. nbutler11 (1305) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - DEC 26, 2008
Tap at the Blue Door. Pours charcoal black with a tan head. Smells and tastes of dijon mustard, mild smoke, and wood. Creamy for a smoked beer, but really balanced. Perfect for a hearty meal. This beer makes me miss Germany, bad. fidel (1302) - Livermore, California, USA - AUG 17, 2010
Thanks jhenry04. Poured very black, smoke, wood, roasted malts, burnt bacon, little caramel. bookman10 (1298) - Osseo, Minnesota, USA - DEC 4, 2010
UPDATED: JAN 15, 2013 I enjoyed it. The smoke is quite strong and permeates the beer to a significant degree, so if this isn’t your thing, try something else. It worked for me. Had a draft with a burger at St. Paul’s Happy Gnome. Little to no head. Some chocolate and sweet undertones there (hard to tell under the smoke). Not quite sure it’s worth the expense (I really wish Surly would get serious about bottling this and Darkness in larger quantities so they wouldn’t be so hard to find), but was glad to have the opportunity to give it a try. Complemented the burger well.**Update: 1/14/13: Just had a bottle of this that I’d been saving for a year and I have to say, it tasted pretty awful. Don’t know that this is a beer that will age well, at least based on this example (still have another year-old bottle to try).
