UPDATED: OCT 5, 2008 A great smoked flavor that only Aecht can beat, but all in all just a bit small to miss the higher rankings.

Tap at Woolleys. Deep brown with some tan lacing. Smokey, leather, dried leaves and earthy hops. Taste is dry with light bitterness. Body is lighter with a foamy feel.

Tap into a snifer showing pitch black with sparse white foam on the edges. The nose first shows a lot of steel tank notes but eventually matures into light roasted malts then finishes with a very Islay peaty aroma (think swampy, smoked malt). The palate is well carbonated and light bodied but creamy and well done. The flavor is very peaty and swampy. Tastes more akin to a whiskey than a beer but without the hard alcoholic bite. Still very good though. I would hesitate to buy a whole bottle unless its shared.

Bottle shared by Mike. Thanks! Pours cola like where its black and you can see through it. Light tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, smoke, and some dark fruit. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and is really smooth and tasty. Great beer!

From a bottle into a glass. The pour is a dark ruby red with no head. The body is thin body with a raisins, bacon, slight salty taste. Its good.

Bottle shared by Rasmusott - been wanting to try this for quite a while, so its really cool to finally try it, although it did disappoint. Pours black with a red hue, not really head on this. Aroma is smokey, wood, dark berries, earthy mineral notes in the lines of the smokey component, blackberry jam, notes of pepper and cinnamon, liquorice, raisins and prunes. Rather nice aroma, although the smoke is a bit off with the earthy character. The taste resembles the smoke from the nose with these earthy mineral notes, which are kind of off. Chocolate notes, prunes, raisins, slightly woody, but nowhere near as complex as the aroma. The lager yeast makes the mouthfeel surprisingly light, and the carbonation is very mild, could use a bit more. Glad to have tried it.

750ml, silver waxed bottle, 2010 edition courtesy of stbroome on BA. thanks, steve! pours a deep, dark brown with an interestingly light khaki head with sticky lacing. aroma is great with big, smoked, ashy malts and salty bacon that by no means overpower the other aromas of roasted almonds, caramel, and dark fruit notes of cherry and fig with hints of coffee, and oaked vanilla as it warms. flavor is delicious as well with smooth, smokey campfire, roasted malts, and dark chocolate backed by notes of charred salami, sweet vanilla, and dark fruits with dry, piney hops, trail mix, and oak on the back end. palate is medium bodied with light carbonation and no trace of alcohol making this one extremely drinkable.overall, a delicious smoked baltic porter.

UPDATED: JAN 15, 2013 I enjoyed it. The smoke is quite strong and permeates the beer to a significant degree, so if this isnt your thing, try something else. It worked for me. Had a draft with a burger at St. Pauls Happy Gnome. Little to no head. Some chocolate and sweet undertones there (hard to tell under the smoke). Not quite sure its worth the expense (I really wish Surly would get serious about bottling this and Darkness in larger quantities so they wouldnt be so hard to find), but was glad to have the opportunity to give it a try. Complemented the burger well.**Update: 1/14/13: Just had a bottle of this that Id been saving for a year and I have to say, it tasted pretty awful. Dont know that this is a beer that will age well, at least based on this example (still have another year-old bottle to try).

FoBAB 2007. Dark dark brown to light black with a razor thin creamy white head. Subdued nose. Small smoke, ala Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen. Small oaky tannins. Some roast, relatively dry, tiny chocolate. Not thick or thin, just right with low CO2. Big sweet flavor, that I just couldnt smell! This is a like a badass sweet Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen! More dark malt character, of course. Big smoke. Sweet, but not cloying. Oak and alcohol balance the sweetness. The roast comes on in the finish. A dry oaky finish. This is probably the most creative beer at FoBAB 2007, and the one most up my alley.
