UPDATED: SEP 16, 2014 ABV: 8.2%. StFun supplied from his cellar giveaway. Many thanks! Tried on my pre-birthday bash (..."a very merry unbirthday... to me? TO YOU!"). To snifter it pours a dark purplish brown with virtually zero head at all, just bubbles and a thin line of foam is the only thing which seems to stop someone from asking if this is indeed a beer. Has some decent lace, however. Aromas of fudge, caramelized raisins, brown sugar, peanut brittle, and a faint yet unmistakeable ash characteristic. Can’t smell too much oak, however. Tastes bittersweet and earthy with notes of grape skins, liquid coffee, black olives, American yeast, smoke and stale Pepsi. Licorice, hops, and soil by swallow. Very thin but slushes around nicely in your mouth. Interesting. Not the best I’ve had from Surly. I had such high hopes. ketchepillar (1208) - Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA - DEC 16, 2007
On tap at brewery. Aroma: Strong smoked ham, a bit of fruitiness. Taste: pretty strong of smoked ham, dark dried fruits. Nice finish. joshwilfong (1200) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - JAN 10, 2009
pitch black with a mild tan head. thick moutfeel and low carbontion. smokey nose, flavor of initial dark malts with a large smokeiness coming through followed by some chocolate notes. tough to drink due to smokiness but a great complex flavor Nsanders (1190) - St Paul, Minnesota, USA - MAR 12, 2014
Tap at Woolley’s. Deep brown with some tan lacing. Smokey, leather, dried leaves and earthy hops. Taste is dry with light bitterness. Body is lighter with a foamy feel. GreatDane1632 (1174) - North Dakota, USA - MAR 31, 2016

Black with no head. Super smokey aroma with some malt. Taste is sweet with tons of smoke. Something about the combination of sweetness with smoke really disgusted me. If the beer was drier I would have totally dug the smoke flavor but with this weird sweetness I can’t take it. ARH (1139) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - APR 26, 2015
On tap, poured into an english tulip pint glass. The beer is dark and oily dark woth a rich cola hue and a light tan colored soap head that has a moderate retention and very light lace. The aroma is a smokey, charred note with roasted coffee beans, and a cookie dough hint with late developing aromas of vanilla and raisin. The taste is a medium high roasted sweet with a complimentary medium slick bitter. The beer is syrupy smooth with a soft fuzz carbonation and a medium full body with flavors of coffee and smokey grilled meats with some undertones of chocolate. It finishes sticky with mostly a spicy clove and coffee that carries to the aftertaste that’s mostly clean with a smokey charred quality. dbarnold (1127) - Bethesda, Maryland, USA - JUN 10, 2012
Very impressed by this one. Manages to be quite smoky yet balanced and lgiht and drinkable. No clue it was near 10%, i would have guessed 5 or 6.
Pours almost black, carbonated, but with little head. Nose and front of the palate are pretty smoky, and give way to a roasty light body with a very clean and quick finish. Definitely worth a try, very unique and very good. fiver29 (1112) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - JUN 26, 2010
Bottle shared by Mike. Thanks! Pours cola like where its black and you can see through it. Light tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, smoke, and some dark fruit. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and is really smooth and tasty. Great beer!
