This is one magnificent lager. The smoked malts dominate this sucker without tasting burnt. It’s black and thick like a good Baltic porter with a tall tan head. The aroma and the taste mingle perfectly. tillmac62 (736) - Gaffney, South Carolina, USA - APR 6, 2016
Dark brown, almost black, pour. Outstanding head volume, quite outstanding retention and lacing.
Rich Rauchbier style nose that is world class. Bacon cooking over a campfire aroma with emphasis on the wood smoke. Subtle notes of roast, molasses and dark fruit lurk underneath. As it warms, a light licorice note mingles with the campfire.
Medium body that is smooth in texture and has nice creamy aspects in the finish. Superb carbonation that has an effervescent tingle in the middle and a nice burst in the finish.
The flavor profile is world class, rich in complexity and extremely well balanced. This balance is exemplified by smoke not dominating the palate as was the case in the nose. Rising to balance, is a rich sweet base that is heavy caramel with very subtle hints of bakers chocolate. The middle hints at bitterness, but serves as the smoke / caramel battleground. As the middle fades, plum, fig and raisin flavors separate. The finish is preceded by a light licorice note just before the aged oak aspect arrives. The finish is a slow fade of smoke, caramel, oak, and a hint of alcohol that delivers a drying finish with a hint of heat. MIBRomeo (2570) - Wisconsin, USA - AUG 10, 2008
Black pour dark tan head, thick lacing. Full palate very well coated.
Great flavor of smoked ham or really a prosciutto, some sweet sugars almost syrups come through as well. Smoked salmon aroma definate meats, rich, light alcohols, smoke is light but present in all phases.
This is the best smoked beer I’ve ever tasted. isaacever (3) - Minnesota, USA - FEB 7, 2011 does not count
I haven’t had a lot of Rauchbier, but I had this at the brewery and bottled and highly recommend both. XmnwildX12 (2079) - Farmington, Minnesota, USA - JUN 18, 2011
UPDATED: NOV 24, 2012 Has a killer smoke scent, and a very pleasing smokey meat like flavor. Perfect for a camp fire.

Draft at the Surly event at Churchkey. Black pour with a big, tan head. Nose starts with that gorgeous meaty smoke character, then shifts to beautiful plum and fig dark fruit presence characteristic of the baltic porter it is, then finally finishes with dry, bitter roast at the end, with a creamy palate throughout. This progression seemed to happen on both the nose and the tongue, which was just awesome. An outstanding beer, perhaps better even than Darkness and Five which I had right next to it. andyhwcinc (1884) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 30, 2013
Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home alone relaxing prior to the NYE holiday. This was an $18 bottle and I was hesitant to get it, but I’m happy that I did. Appearance is a murky pitch black with a rich but quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is fantastic...oak, smoke, chocolate, and vanilla, it’s rich but not potent. Taste is equally fantastic. I feel like the oak takes away the harshness of the smoked malt but retains a nice flavor, mixed with the chocolate and vanilla. There is a licorice element in this as well. Overall it’s pretty great and I’m happy that I’ve had it. Very happy that Surly is in Illinois! BeerIsMyGod (17) - Arizona, USA - FEB 6, 2014
Served in a bulb glass, very pillowy mocha head. Deep ruby in color and a mellow feel in the mouth. Tastes of an open wood fire with chocolate and toffee notes. I am a fan. steelcitybrew (454) - Orlando, Florida, USA - AUG 19, 2010
Pours a jet black with little or no head. Aroma is smoky sausage and hoppy sweetness. Taste is smokey caramel, toffee and just goodness. Palate is good balaced. Good finish. Overall a pretty great beer. dionysus (1486) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 28, 2011
Bottle pours deep mahogany, almost black, with a khaki head. Aroma shows notes of smoke, salted meat, dark chocolate, oak, and roasted nuts. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of coffee, molasses, light ash, and toasted marshmallow.
