5 or 6 oz. pour, on tap at Mackenzie in Minneapolis. Consumed on 12-14-07. Coffee, chocolate, and plum scents from the malt. Sweet tobacco, leather, and black cherry, and curry scents from the smoke. Vanilla from the oak. Pronounced underlying sweetness in the aroma. Bitter smell that probably derives from the dark malts, but perhaps some may come from hops. The aroma is pleasant, but I wish it were stronger, especially the smoke component. The smell really isn’t all that smoky. Pours a dark brown, almost black with a mahogany hue. Almost no head. Coffee bitterness is the primary initial taste. Some cigarette (as opposed to cigar) tobacco, but not much. Seems to be somewhat hoppy, but that may be an illusion from the dark malts, smoke, and oak. Sweet tobacco and sugar flavors emerge eventually. Alcohol not fully masked. Medium body. Soft and lively in the palate; typical Surly texture. Oak Aged Smoke is good, but, as a big fan of both Surly and smoked beers, I was hoping for more. Dark viscous used motor oil color with a thick grimy head. Aroma is surprisingly light for a smoked beer. Smoke flavor is not overwhelming, but plays a nice complimentary roll. Medium bodied. Well done, as a lot of rauch beers seem to be heavy on smoke and light on body, which doesn’t describe this beer at all. GTMW 2008. The beer pours to a really dark brown body with a tan head. The aroma is chocolate and light smoked meats. The flavor is sweet sugary malts and light smoked meats. A nice medium body leaves this beer pretty balanced. tjthresh (1872) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - OCT 24, 2009
Glass at Darkness Day. Pour is opaque black with some lighter brown head. The smoke here is fiarly light and is ahy, not porkish like some smoke beer tends to be. This isn’t all that smoked at all. A decent Baltic Porter. Chocolaty with a smidge of roast and dry ash smoke. Medium body with a dry finish.

On tap at Stub and Herbs. Poured black with thin brown/tan head, smelled instantly of smoke and nothing else. Tasted much more balanced, with a nice malt start and thick smoky finish. This poured a dark brown color with a smaller beige head, courtesy of a generous man from DLD 10. Aroma was lots of thick campfire smoke, with roasted coffee poking through as well. Aroma is bacon, hickory, and smoke, with dark malts and alcohol. Smells very clean and slightly sweet.
Pour is absolutely black with no head.
Taste is intensely smoked, sweet, lots of the typical baltic porter- chocolate, cocoa, light to moderate bitterness, and slight alcohol.
Finish is slightly sweet, smoky bacon, and low bitterness.
Good, if a little too sweet.
