FoBAB well, better than the Aechtliner urbock stuff, heh. Pretty alright. not a big fan. smoother, milkier, less bacon. all smoke. didnt realize till later this was a ’baltic porter’. drewbeerme (3921) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 12, 2008
UPDATED: DEC 29, 2009 on tap at maproom. pours dark brown with creamy tan head that didn’t quite last till i finished. aroma of dry bakers chocolate, dark fruits, and smoked notes. as it warmed the nose developed a nice dark chocolate and more complex smokey wood character. flavor of dark fruits, chocolate, peaty smoked character to it that also developed nicely as it warmed. i couldnt feel the alcohol at all. this drank really easy. i agree with the listing as this isn’t that smokey. i’d love to try this unsmoked though.3.9.
12/29/09, draft at maproom, 09 vintage, pours blk no head, nose of beachwood smoked with mild dark fruit and chocolate. Flavors are sweet raisins, chocolate, roast with smokey undertones. Heavy slick mouthfeel. Damn this would be killer if it wad thinner and less sweet. 3.5

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2010 GABF 2008 and again in bottle October 2010. Pours black with an average, frothy, dark brown head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, chocolate, nutty), light hops (herbs), average yeast (leather) with notes of smoke and brown sugar. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness. beastiefan2k (4082) - HdG (past: NYC, KS, Rain City), Maryland, USA - OCT 29, 2008
UPDATED: DEC 31, 2010 Cask @ Darkness Day in my brand new Darkness tulip. I was told this was aged on in cedar barrels. Each of the beers served there came in 3 forms, tap, out of the bright tank, and cask. In hindsight I should have not tried a smoked, barrel aged, Baltic porter on cask, but either way here we go. I was watching the de-bunging of the cask and got one of the first pours. Its completely black, nothing but blackness. That includes any semblance of a head or lacing, again completely nothing after just a few seconds after the pour. Aroma is smoke (lightly sweet, lightly BBQ) which I like. Behind that is an oily astringent licorice, I don’t like that. Taste has more of that licorice astringency with the smoke on the back end. Mouthfeel is lightly oily and of course very undercarbonated. It seems where well structured I just needed to try it NOT on cask. I will definitely give this another go around if I come across it on tap. 7/4/7/3/14

Had this out of the bright tank at Darkness day, one year later. Was really hoping to love this but I was again disappointed, not a bad beer but nothing special. The smoke is there, its not really backed up with anything, just some watery dark malts and light licorice.
Re-rate out of the bottle, shared by Dansting. Same slightly disappointing beer, smoke, dark water malts, not backbone. 7/3/7/3/15
Big thanks to Kevin for sharing this one!
A-pours a dark black liquid with a little tan colored head that is tight and creamy.
S-the nose brings a ton of smokiness up front, lots of roasted and smokey malty goodness. notes of chocolate and anise. sweetness and hops in the back, plums, grassy hops.
T-the taste is even smokier. lots of smoke dark malts, chocolate, anise behind. plums and raisins in the back with a light grassy hop presence.
M-the feel is so smooth and creamy on the palate. the carb is light but enough to hold the body throughout. hint of crispness at the finish with just a touch of dry in the back.
D-definitely a good bit of smoke with a good malty sweetness and nice hop presence in the finish. solid drink here with some nice maltiness going on.

Nice big smoke nose and flavor. A little peppery hot and rough through the finish. redlight (2325) - Orlando, Florida, USA - JUL 5, 2010
Light smoke aromas with malty notes on the nose. Pours a dark amber, brown. Very malty with caramel notes and hints of molasses with just hints of smoke. Not bad but I could use more smoke. Papsoe (25056) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - MAY 23, 2011
Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Pinball. Pours a pitch black with a creamy and lacing beige head. Distinct smoke in the nose - both peat and Bamberg smoke? Solid body, carbonation is a little low, somewhat rubbery, sweet roast, heavy smoke with a fairly malt bitter finish. Nice alright. 230511 italarican (1606) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 14, 2011
Bottle generously shared at the RBSG grand tasting. Pours a dark chocolate brown. Aroma of dark chocolate and oak chips. Flavor has coffee and smoke with a slight meaty quality. Warm, slightly syrupy body. Moderate smokiness throughout. Ok. cruchr123 (29) - St.Paul, Minnesota, USA - JUL 23, 2011
Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Darkness snifter.
A- Dark black color, one finger beige head, dissipates quickly, big bubbles left over, splotchy lacing, well carbonated.
S- Not how I remembered it, really smoky, big bacon aroma, roasted malt, really one dimensional smell.
T- Again really smoky as well, I’ve had this couple of times on tap at separate occasions, I’m a little let down by the bottled version. The two times on tap the beers were so much more complex and I was able to pick out different flavors in the beer, all I’m getting is smoky bacon flavors, slight roasted malts, some roasted coffee, but it’s all in the background.
M- Medium mouth feel, decent carbonation, the smoke flavor really coats the mouth.
O- My expectations were so high from the previous times I had it on tap, which is why I was a little let down when I finally tried this bottle and all that stood out was the smoky roasted bacon flavors, that said this is still a solid quality beer.
