UPDATED: SEP 28, 2011 Tap in a pint glass at Surly Brewery. Wow! This one had a great smokey smell and flavor - I’ve never tried any other smoked beers and this was a great introduction! An interesting and complex lager, with the flavors changing as I sipped. Very strong in alcohol content as well as flavor. I definitely want to drink this again! bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 6, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.
Appearance: Extremely dark brown without much head and very spotty lacing.
Aroma: Smoked malts, oak, molasses, raisins, vanilla and licorice. Impressive for a lager, which tend to be mild in the scent department.
Taste: Oak and smoke is very predominant, with nice rounded semi-sweet malts of molasses, plum, licorice and figs. Ends with a touch of spicy and bitter hops, which co-mingle nicely with the smoke.
Palate: Low carbonation, smooth and creamy lager body that is somewhat full bodied.
Overall: Very nice balance between a Baltic Porter, Rauchbier and Oak-Aged beer. Delicious and very easy to drink, belaying its 8.2% abv. bluejacket74 (1993) - Reynoldsburg, Ohio, USA - JAN 1, 2012
750 ml wax dipped bottle, 2011 vintage. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that went away quickly. There’s a very small amount of lacing left on the glass. The brew smells like smoked and roasted malt, peat, coffee, and a bit of chocolate. It tastes like smoked malt/meats, burnt/charred malt, coffee, and some dark fruit and chocolate. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s a little creamy and slick with low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a pretty good brew overall, I’d definitely buy this again in the future. BeerBeforeH20 (129) - Minnesota, USA - MAR 10, 2012
First sip had me slightly taken aback, halfway through I was really starting to love this beer, last sip had me ordering another. One of the most unique beers I’ve had, has very complex notes of flavor that all shine in thier own way. Recommend trying this one if you have an open mind and can appreciate the oddity that makes it special. beerisgoodforu (992) - Nørresundby, DENMARK - MAY 21, 2012
Bottle. Pours a really dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of smoked malts, lots of smoked pork aromas like bacon, sausage and ham, some subtle oak, dark fruits, roasted malt, campfire notes, burnt wood and subtle vanilla. The flavor follows the nose with lots of smoke flavors of burnt wood, smoked pork, ham, sausage and bacon, roasted malt, dark fruits, roasted malt, oak and vanilla. The body is on the full side of medium with a creamy mouth feel. Overall a really tasty Smoked Baltic Porter!

Bottle at Savor. This was my first beer from this brewer. I really enjoyed it! Flavor has the smoke all over it, but it’s not overpowering. Alcohol is well hidden. Very well balanced, would drink again if I can find it. HonusWagner (2191) - Florida, USA - SEP 7, 2012
Really amazing stuff. Smoked meat but meshed well with rich dark fruity characteristics that keep things from being too Schlenkerla-esque. Much easier to drink than other smoked beers I’ve had, at least out of the ones that taste very smoky. Also has a really good, sticky mouthfeel. Most Baltic porters have a similar flavor, but Surly has managed a unique brew with this one. The addition of smoke fits in nicely; something I rarely like, but do in this beer. Tasty! Strong beer, so not a session ale. bluemooner (657) - East Bethel, Minnesota, USA - FEB 4, 2013
2012 Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black with ruby legs and a medium, foamy, tan head and some lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, raisins, plums, and some woody smokiness. Several layers of flavor noted: caramel malt with chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar; sweet dark fruit including plums, dates, figs, raisins, and berries; and some nice but not overpowering smokiness with oak and meatiness, almost bacon flavors. Medium body with good carbonation and some alcohol noticeable but fitting. Great brew all around.
