Bottle:   Deep caramel in color, moderate frothy sandy head, spotty lacing.   Big malty nose, biscuit, dull caramel/toffee, some over ripened fig/date/raisin, musty, perhaps a bit prunish.   Not much hop aroma, so surprisingly English like in my head.   Warming, lots of fig/date, a bit prunish on the backside.   Caramel/Toffee is there albeit dull, whole wheat breadiness, a bit salty too.   Not as sweet as it needs to be.   Also somewhat dry.   Comes across as an old prune crossed with stale caramel/toffee on a loaf of old whole wheat bread.   While not bad, it certainly could be brighter, sweeter, and hoppier (especially for an American example).   Still enjoyable, however.   Body and mouthfeel are nothing to complain about, decent malt backbone.   Finishes with little umph.   Perhaps there is a little pith or citrusy peel in the finish.   The caramel maltiness is not big enough or sweet enough to carry this one tho. The WW2 history nerd in me wanted to enjoy this more. It was a very standard barleywine. Aroma of nuts, dark fruit, candi sugar, and caramel. Taste was quite sweet and intense with some alcohol. Not bad but nothing special. cubs (10675) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - OCT 28, 2012
Bottle @ Darkness Day 2012 shared by Armin. Thanks! Pours a dark reddish brown appearance with a cream colored head. Caramel, mild oaky, toffee, plum aroma. Somewhat fruity, toffee, light chocolate, plum/raisin, a touch nutty flavor. Pretty tasty. Ernesto987 (6050) - Arizona, USA - OCT 26, 2012
A great base barleywine, very average, not too sweet or not malty, pretty cool. tricyclist (1125) - Florida, USA - SEP 23, 2012
Sample pour. Deep hazed red/golden amber. Little to no head. Aroma is malt and mild fruit, pears, light hop, caramel. Flavor is lighter and not overpowering. Caramel and toffee up front with light lingering fruit notes. Lighter body.

Bomber bottle: Pours a cloudy burnt orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet & roasty with hints of pecans, hops, brown sugar, & a mild alcohol presence. Sweet flavor has a creamy texture with hints of toffee, hops, & a mild alcohol presence in the mild bitter finish.

750 ml bottle shared by Chris- thanks again, Chris! Pours a hazy amber color with a tiny off-white ring for a head. Aroma of toffee, pecans, brown sugar, dates, and toast. Flavor of toffee, pine resin, pecans, brown sugar, dates, figs, plums, and some sneaky booze. Medium-bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel and low carbonation. Surprised to see this rated so low. I bet if it had been brewed at Cigar City its average rating would be about 0.5 higher. HonusWagner (2208) - Florida, USA - AUG 22, 2012
Smell resembles cat food, kind of fishy/grainy. Slightly sweet but really strong hop presence that clashes unfavorably with the cat food taste. Just not good at all, on tap at the brewery. jjuf1853 (1302) - Land O Lakes, Florida, USA - AUG 19, 2012
Draft at Cigar City during release party for Roosevelt/Church(on a)hill collaborations. Poured into a snifter glass with minimal head it had a murky, brownish amber color. Lots of toffee, dark pitted fruits and booze in the aroma. Flavor was similar to the aroma. Noticeable alcohol, but a nice drinking barleywine. brokensail (16609) - Dublin, California, USA - JUL 30, 2012
The beer is a murky amber color with a small khaki head. Sweet caramel and toffee, a nice nutty note, and some pine hops. Maybe just a little bitter on the palate. Fairly nutty, sweet toffee, bread, and caramel. A light creaminess, toasted malt, and citric hops an pine. Hint of booze on the palate.
