A dark, hoppy Floridian Dark Ale. This award winning dark ale features a rich smoothness and complex hop profile.

Blackwater Floridian Dark Ale is an American-style Black Ale at the low end of the IPA alcohol range (6.4% ABV), with an abundance of hop flavor and aroma. It represents what we consider to be an improvement on what are being called Black IPAs, or Cascadian Dark Ales, deriving its "darkness" from chocolate wheat malt rather than the bitter roasted barley used in most examples of this new style. The name is derived from Florida’s "Blackwater" rivers, which are dark in tannins from the native oak trees.

Blackwater was created through a collaboration between Head Brewer Craig Birkmaier and Eric Luman, Head Brewer at Jacksonville’s Green Room brewery. It was judged the Best Beer in Florida at the 2011 Best Florida Beer Competition.

A dark brown ale with a thin frothy brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with grassy hops, light coffee grind, musty character, pleasant and complex. In mouth, a nice bitter sweet chocolate with fruity esters, light floral hops, grapefruit pulp, woody notes, very nice. Bottle.

Bomber. Pours a muddy brown with a tan head and hoppy, citrusy aroma. Taste is hoppy and citrusy with pine up front along with nice roasted melt and chocolate notes that go into the finish. Very nice black IPA

Pours a dark deep muddy brown pour with a small creamy have head. Nose is hoppy and bittersweet with descent citrus. Tadte is bitter with some pine and rest and a myriad of citrus. Finishes on hoppy notes as well and ends on a nice bittersweet citrus flavor. Nice BIPA ! Quaff Score 8 / 10

Deep brown pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is roasted maltiness, coffee, and resiny hops. Flavor is semi sweet malt start with the roastiness coming through. A nice bitter finish, a touch of which I think comes from the malt. Just a touch fizzy at the end but solid @bp

750 ml bottle shared by voodoofish65usf - thanks again, Chris! Pours a dark amber-brown with a soft khaki head that laces the glass. Aroma of tobacco, chocolate, citrus zest, pepper, toast, earth, and oak. Chris suspected this might be a few months old, but it seemed more like a year-plus old, like something bad is starting to set in way too soon. Flavor of earth, metal, tobacco, citrus, toast, dark fruit, and tannins. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a thinned, tannic, sweet, metallic mouthfeel. A bit off. Didn’t really work for me.

750 ml bottle shared by Chris. Pours a clear cola brown with a large fluffy beige head. The aroma and flavor have a tart, funky thing going on like there is some infection, wood, tannins maybe, but doesn’t seem much like a black IPA.

750ml bottle, thanks to voodoofish65usf. Labeled 6.8%. Brown color. Thin khaki off-white head. Leaves good thicker lace. Chris says he’s had this for a few months, and no date is found on the bottle. Kind of a musty smell in the nose, and a strange soy sauce like flavor in the taste. Light bit of tartness, seems like it’s close to infection. I guess that’s the tannin? Really big tannin on this, if that’s what I’m tasting. No mention of wood though so I’m not sure how that would be... Medium-plus body, smooth, kind of soft texture. Dry finish. Spicy malt. Some roast. Interesting stuff to try. Don’t get much hop from it at the moment. Not a fan of this at all.

Rated based on notes taken 11 Jan 2014 -- Poured from a bomber. This was a surprising beer, once I read the label of what it is. I tried it and really enjoyed the dark almost roasty malt base this beer had, with a great hoppy nose. On tasting the hops followed through to balance and subdue the malt, but there was no lingering hop flavor. Intriguing and delicious.
