Noticeably different from other black IPAs as mentioned with chocolate wheat rather than roasted grains. Flavor is slight dark fruit, citrus, chocolate, and wheat. Bitterness and alcohol presence are hidden compared to other BIPAs. Tastes great and offers new dimensions to the style zgaier (1962) - Coral Springs, Florida, USA - DEC 14, 2014
Bomber. Pours a muddy brown with a tan head and hoppy, citrusy aroma. Taste is hoppy and citrusy with pine up front along with nice roasted melt and chocolate notes that go into the finish. Very nice black IPA DialSquare (5129) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUN 9, 2011
From an old note. No idea where I tried it. swamphead blackwater - nice - more ipaish - pine, reasony, grapefruit- very drinkable - less of the harsh malty from most bipa’s, 7.6 PorterPounder (8267) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - APR 6, 2012
Tallahassee, Fl - Fermentation Lounge - on tap. Dark, black. tar-like pour, medium thick mocha colored head, nice sticky web of lacing. Fresh, aromatic spruce-like aroma with a touch of earthiness followed by some fresh black dirt accents. Brief licorice notes in the flavor, some chocolate accents, citrus hints and an earthy back end of fresh potting soil. Mouthfeel is sufficiently chewy and thick. All in all, very solid and I am liking what I am seeing from this brewery thus far. Thorpe429 (5122) - , Illinois, USA - APR 11, 2012
Big thanks to G311 for sharing this one. Served in a mini tulip.
Pours a very dark brown color with a nice off-white head and a good bit of lacing on the way down. The nose carries a good dosage of pine and light roast plus faint citrus in the background. Flavor is also roasty with a nice hop component. Light-medium body and good carbonation. Very solid.

Had this one at SAVOR. Aroma was roasted malts, not overpowering - which is often my issue with a lot of Black Ales. A touch of earthy citrus and earthy notes to it as well. Flavor was earthy notes, citrus, roasted malts. Pretty tasty. sloshgator (770) - Orlando, Florida, USA - SEP 1, 2013
Swamp Head Darkwater Floridian Dark Ale is a decent take on a unique style. Light hoppy aroma but not very complex. Dark pour with a frothy head. Taste is hoppy but not complex with some roasted barley notes. While Darkwater is enjoyable and unique, it is not really a standout as an IPA nor as a black ale. Pours dark mahogany with a medium sized tan head. Smells strongly of resinous pine. Taste is woody, piney, with hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Swamp Head Darkwater Floridian Dark Ale finishes with a lingering woody dryness. jjgmd (2247) - Coral Springs, Florida, USA - DEC 14, 2014
Pours a dark deep muddy brown pour with a small creamy have head. Nose is hoppy and bittersweet with descent citrus. Tadte is bitter with some pine and rest and a myriad of citrus. Finishes on hoppy notes as well and ends on a nice bittersweet citrus flavor. Nice BIPA ! Quaff Score 8 / 10 MartinT (10036) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 4, 2015
My Bottom Line:
This fluffy Black Pale Ale benefits from floral and fruity notes, making the roasted chestnut and tobacco allusions become even more engaging.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the dark mahogany.
-The mouthfeel is very comfortable, just like their bottled Smoked Porter’s.
-This is quite intricate!
-The resinous hop bitterness balances out the malt and yeast contributions.
-All in all, this is very drinkable.
