COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Previously brewed at 5.0%.

Appearance: brown to red in the glass.
Nose: generously malty with subtle hop notes and hints of fruity fermentation esters.
Palate: nutty crystal malt to the fore, with a hint of chocolate malt roastiness, leading into a satisfyingly balanced malt hop middle. The end is nutty, with a lingering hop note.
Summary: a rewarding world class premium ale made with maris otter pale ale malt & dash of chocolate malt, with two classic english hops for bitterness and aroma. St magnus is a beer with a fabulous malt hop balance. If it’s well vented the hops just win through in the flavour profile.

Cask (Black Door, Helsinki)

Rich nutty amber, beautiful persistent spongy head. Lovely UK bitter aroma - lovely malts, lovely sweet fruity esters, and some great noble hops too, absolutely classic. Soft palate, gentle carbonation. Flavour quite fullish in the mouth - good ESB-like sweetish malts fill the mouth, but these are drier and nuttier, and hoppier. And the finish is very hoppy, dry and bitter, quite herbal. Storming ESB, absolutely classic. Can’t imagine how to make it better without making it more extreme in some direction, which might change its style.

Half, cask at Cloisters. Clear, dark amber coloured body. Tiny, white layer. Spotty lacing to the upper level of the glass. Honeyed sweet citrus nose. Fine blended taste character of fruity hops and caramel malts followed by a bittersweet taste. Medium bodied. Satisfying version of the style (Edinburgh 07.08.2013).

On tap @ the Stockbridge Tap. This version really lifts this beer which is really one of Highland’s more austere normally. The balance of zingy hops and malt sweetness is spot on.

On tap @ Cloisters Highland Tap takeover. Pours a chestnut red with a well proportioned head. The nose is quite pungent with resin, caraway seeds and apples. The taste is more resin and apples. The palate is medium bodied with a thick texture but this lacks the refreshment of the other Highland beers. Overall, this was better in bottle I think - maybe needs to be kegged?
