3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours an opaque dark brown with a pillowy tab head. Head dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate amount of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, and some coffee. Taste of chocolate malts and a slight hoppiness, with the taste of alcohol becoming more prominent as the beer warms. Mouthfeel is exceptional--creamy, velvety, with only slight carbonation. Beer does become more coherent as it warms, especially flavor. In sum, a solid flavored porter with a distinctive mouthfeel. Chocolate is more prominent than coffee, but the maltiness makes this one most drinkable.
22oz bottle, thanks to Jay A. for sharing! Kind of clear, very dark brown color, slightly reddish through the clear parts. Thin tan, light brown head. Dots and bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation, kind of crisp, Jay says this is probably a couple years old. Some dark fruit, mild oxidization in the flavor. Good kind of berry, coffee aroma, some cookie. Good moderate roast, moderate sweet, moderate bitter, more dry finish. Pretty tasty coffee imperial porter. Easy-drinking for the ABV. Great balance. Nice chewiness. slowrunner77 (12804) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 30, 2014
"sweet chocolate and large amounts of coffee, coffee, coffee. not subtle in flavor or aroma, but not the slightest hint of any alcohol either. well done if you’re a java fan." GreatDane1632 (1174) - North Dakota, USA - FEB 26, 2014
Just catching up on some old ratings from Untappd -- First rated on 21 May 2011. BS and SC shared this one, and thanks be to them. This beer was a treasure. rbrazell (1763) - Florida, USA - JUL 20, 2013
Bottle from stevencon! Black pour with a small tan head. All coffee is lost in this one and melded into bitter dark malts, chocolate with a light ashiness. Flavor is pretty similar with a nice dried out body and bitterness. Aged pretty nicely in my opinion. jbruner (5274) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - JUL 19, 2013
Bottle shared thanks to stevencon! Pours a translucent brownish black with filmy tan head that leaves nice rings. Aroma is sweet and dark chocolate, a nice coffee undertone, and that familiar porter yeast soy. Taste is vanilla, chocolate, then coffee, a slightly bitter finish and thin mouth. Solid stuff for the style.
