On tap 5 oz. sample at Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville, VA.
Clear, very deep burgundy brown with khaki head and very good lacing.
Very mild aroma of bread, chocolate and coffee.
Taste of weak hot chocolate, watery coffee and toast.
Very light body and medium/light carbonation.
Completely lacking in intensity--weak in aroma, taste and body.

Tap at Merrifield location. Pours black, near opaque with dark brown highlights with a medium, frothy and bubbly tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and nutty malt, no detectable hops, light fruity esters, dates, and plums. Flavor is chocolate, roast, dark caramel malt, light wood, light bitterness (some is malt derived), dates, plums, and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation, low warmth. Appearance: Almost black with ruby highlights and a creamy, off-white head. Pretty good head retention and nice lacing left behind.
Aroma: Light nose with notes of roasted malt and light caramel. They have a bad habit of serving their beers super cold so I am sure there is more to this one.
Flavor: I wish there was more to this one! Very light in the flavor department with notes of roasted malt, wood, and husk. Overall very watery and flavorless. This thing tastes closer to a black lager (and a bad one at that).
Palate: Medium carbonation with a watery mouthfeel and a medium, roasty finish.
Overall: This is just a poor attempt at a beer. Tasteless and not worth drinking. Not recommended. jrob21 (3734) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - NOV 30, 2008
On tap at the brewpub over Thanksgiving break 2008. One of the better offerings I’ve had by these guys. Full flavored porter big on the chocolate and roasted malt. Burnt malt aromas as well to round out the experience.

A very decent porter that leaves you satisfied. They also offer a great black and tan that has their great american pale ale mixed with this porter, pretty good stuff. DukeBrewDevil (732) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - NOV 22, 2007
Draft at restaurant. Super dark redish/black that lets a touch of light through. No head left when it arrived at the table. Simple flavor of roasted grains. Decent burnt flavors, dark coffee, sugars, and a bit of hops. Not very complex or memorable, but a good, basic porter. radagast83 (8152) - Arlington, Virginia, USA - JUN 16, 2007
Merrifield location. Nice dark pour with a medium tan head. Frankly not a whole lot of aroma - roasted, but thats about it, nothing bad to it though. Flavor is extremely roasted, with a nice amount of chocolate, and caramel. Very creamy. Just about the only complaint was that it was probably served just a little too cold. binz001 (7) - USA - APR 16, 2007 does not count
didn’t have the full flavor that i expected from the apperance. not thick enough for a great mouth feel. Braudog (6763) - Yorktown, Virginia, USA - JAN 14, 2007
Well, it starts out pretty good with a nice appealing reddish black hue. Then it begins to disappoint. Bit thin, for sure. There is a hint of chocolate character but in the end this fails to live up to the heartiness one would expect from a good porter. (#2647, 1/13/07)
