5 oz sample at Sweetwater Tavern Merrifield. 2010 brew aged in barrel until tapping today (according to manager). Deep brown with no head. Aroma is big bourbon and chocolate. Draft. Pours deep, dark brown with a thin trace of head. Aroma is dark fruit, brown sugar, alcohol, and sweet malt. Flavor is heavy malt with notes of dark fruit, alcohol, caramel, and oak. 4oz pour at the Lupulin Reunuless at RFD DC. Pours an oily, opaque black with a creamy, beige head. Aromas of caramel, coffee liqueur, smoke, toasted malts, licorice, yeast. Flavor of wood pulp, malty, caramel, coffee, apples. Full bodied, boozy finish. Very unique, leeched a lot of good barrel flavors.

A: Pours a very dark black with a thin dark tan head. A bit of lacing as it makes its way down, mostly around the edges of the liquid.
S: Loads of bourbon alongside chocolate, oak, bits of coffee, and a bit of roastiness.
T: Same as with the smell, and the bourbon is really nice alongside the mostly chocolate character of the brew. A bit of oak and alcohol make their way in.
M: Mouthfeel is quite viscous with low carbonation and only a slight bit of alcohol heat.
D: Outstanding flavor and a beautiful mouthfeel. I really, really wished that they would have filled growlers of this, or that I wouldn’t have been driving and could have had this all night.

Thick black pour with a light tan head. Creamy bourbon aroma. Very sweet sticky bourbon flavor. Some roast malt stoutiness makes its way through. Not bad but a bit too sweet and sticky for me. brainlair (236) - Maryland, USA - MAR 4, 2010
On tap at Sweetwater in Merrifield 3/5/2010. Pitch black out of the tap, with very little head. Nose has lots of bourbon, alcohol, and a bit of sweetness. Has a sweet roasty flavor with tons of bourbon, some licorice and a bitter finish. Overall it’s a good beer, but something’s off in the flavor that reveals itself prominently the finish, and leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Reminds me a lot of BCS, but not as well executed. Picked up a growler from the Merrifield store, doesnt actually say the words ’oak aged’ on it, but its what I ordered and I think this is the stuff. Pours a dark black with ruby tinges, large frothy dark chocolate head and lots of lace. Big aroma with lots of chocolaty malt, roasted with oaky tones. Flavor is rich with lots of moderately sweet malt, lots of dark chocolate, tones of fig, hints of vanilla, oak, and dark fruit: cherries, and raspberries. A noticeable alcohol presence but not at all overpowering, lightly hopped with just a touch of bitterness. On tap at Merrifield location - February 27th. Apparently this was what I had instead of the "regular" version. Pours a very dark black, with a relatively small dark, almost milk chocolate, tan head. The aroma is chocolates, coffee, roasted caramel and a touch of dried fruits. Flavor has a noticeable alcohol bite, with plenty of dark chocolates and roastiness. It’s not bad (as I’ve rated it pretty highly), but my only objection was that it took quite some time to actually drink - and was not really that refreshing of a beverage. Aside from that it’s one of the best crafted beers that I’ve tried from them.
