Sampled at the 2010 Yokohama Beer Fest. This was aged 8 years and was smooth as a baby’s bottom. Slightly smoked and suitable for a good downing. Was missing the really malty backbone, but made up for it with undisputed real ale character.
Dark muddy brown color that isn’t particularly attractive. The nose is modestly clean with smoked cheese and a touch of caramel. The mouth is very malty with prickly carbonation. The smokiness is subtle but firm and comes
In waves. Very smooth and clean. Fuller body than I expected. Didn’t have the wow factor I remember from years past but this is good stuff. jc1762 (1652) - Washington DC, USA - SEP 18, 2016
Thanks TimE for the bottle! Poured into a snifter showing moderately filtered dark brown and orange with sparse white foam that quickly dissipates.
The nose shows lightly intense notes of smoke and bacon with light caramel malts around the edge. Nowhere near the intense level seen in the Aecht Sclerenka.
The palate is medium bodied and light carbonated. Flavors of light smoke and bacon supported on a bed of light baked bready and lagery malts. Finish shows a soy sauce and smoky bitterness with a resurgence of bacon flavors on the linger. willisread (3811) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - SEP 17, 2016
Tap at CBM Koenji. Smoked ham and honey aromas dominate with a touch of strawberry jam in the background. Well-balanced on the palate. Nice lingering finish with some smoked caramel and fruit. Lovely! GT (10017) - San Diego, California, USA - JUN 11, 2016
On tap at Craft Beer Bar Marciero in Osaka, JP. Flatter hazy red amber. Nose is sweeter cherry, no smoke I can detect. Taste is richer with nice smoked sweet pork, slick and oily mouthfeel, medium to higher body. Pretty nice. jfb (6984) - GERMANY - DEC 16, 2015
(bottle) hazy deep amber colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of cherry stones, debrecziner and paprika powder, slightly perfumed, with a touch of herbal hops and roasted malts. flavour is mostly lemon peel, light smoked ham and cherry stones, with some hints of of sugar icing, apricots and a light-bitter finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle. Smoked balsamico and strawberry aroma, meaty. Hazy, Amber , low head. Good smoked berry flavor, they managed the umami note, medium light, mellow finish. Very interesting and Christmassy. SinH4 (6573) - Garching b. München, GERMANY - DEC 15, 2015
bottle, thanks jfb. Amber color with small head. Smoked pork, bacon. Balsamico. Very interesting. Taste is fruity and smoke, umami. No caramel, no roasted malts, very surprising. Nice! Wombata (627) - Kobe, JAPAN - NOV 3, 2014
Tap at Enibru Tazawako Event
Aroma: light smoke
Flavor: smoky barbeque, malt, yeast and more smoke.
Comment: Nicely done without overdoing the smoky character. shoulderbroken (4256) - Tokyo, JAPAN - JAN 26, 2014
Tap at Server Land. Rich copper red colour, creamy off white head. Aroma is sausages and smoked cheese. Taste, smoke is prominent, meaty, light caramel, cheesy, honey! Decent maltiness. Really easy to drink and different flavours come out as you go down the glass. Great stuff. dfearnley (2405) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - NOV 30, 2013
Draft to flute
Sake, plums, peach, and brown sugar, but not saccharin and subtle smokiness. Deep transparent red with a thin white ring. The plum is quite strong, some peppery smokiness though. Not quite a rauchbier in my opinion.
