UPDATED: APR 8, 2016 At rather unusual beer. Highly carbonated with fine effervescent bubbles. The cacao might have worked a little better in a darker stout like beer but this was a amber. 750. Batch No. 99. From a shop in Chicago next to where my wife was buying running clothes. The shop was not in the greatest shape, but there were some ok beers in the cooler, including this one. Big carbonation in pour. Bit of chocolate/cocoa powder in taste. Not dark in color. Pretty decent. Some fruit in finish, maybe blueberry like. Only 7 ratings so far? Corked bottle and served in Duvel snifter: Pours a slightly cloudy deep amber hue with a fizzy but lasting head , spotty lacework. The aroma has notes of tropical fruits (mango, starfruit, and banana) along with slight toasted and biscuity malts, surprisingly minimal cocoa but it is there along with some strange but approachable peaty like smoke essence. Wow, I am really digging the flavor profile, fruity and grainy with a baker’s dark chocolate tone. Add some light allspice and earthy yeast character then you have a very unique brew that I am sure will not be for everyone but is for me. The palate is light and lively, perhaps my only complaint is the lack for a cleaner and "poppin" finish that would have driven this beer to otherworldly status. Much like the first time I had the Reserve Wheat, I am floored and wonder why more people have not jumped on this bandwagon? You want something out of ordinary then this could be your beer. 750 ml bottle. Semi cloudy amberish pour, with small chunk floaters and foamy very light tan head. Banana, apricot, stone fruit, yeasty, definite cocoa, sweet sugars, a bit of roast, and some earthy pepper. Really weird, the chocolate is noticeable, but I just don’t like the beer that much. 750ml bottle. Rating #6. Hazy orangish/brown color with a dirty white head. Fruity and sweet, brown sugar, banana and a little apple. Earthy, a little chocolate more fruit, apple peel, pretty decent. (2330)

750 cc from Blue Dog. Pours turbid orange with big fluffy 2-finger eggshell head. Nose is caramel malt, hot pepper, banana, cacao. Tastes malty, semi-sweet, with notes of peppery spice, hops, mild cacao, and finishing fruit. Medium complexity level, and overall decent but not great. Bottle from Batch # 99. Popped the cork and it tried to escape but I caught it in time. Initial taste was fruit sour then cocoa. After it warmed a little, it became much more cocoa forward with stone fruit and cherry notes to it. Like eating a chocolate bar with dried fruit in it. Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Poured a dark golden honey liquid with a soft pillow of foam topping as a head. In the aroma, there is a fruity nose of banana and banana bread with a slight background of chocolate and mint like that of a York peppermint patty. The flavor is initially tart with a strange astringent taste of cocoa powder and bitter grounded coffee bean that is a little harsh to drink. Not at all what I was expecting since I was under the impression this was a stout. It certainly is an interesting recipe but I didn’t enjoy it. Bottle from batch 99. Pours with a hazy, deep copper-orange hued body with a massive, lightly tan head. Odd aromas. Estery, apricot, fruity, banana, dried stone fruit, earthy, dusty, cocoa, coffee, mild roast, vanilla, anise, pepper and dates. Flavors are of dried banana, plantains, vanilla and chocolate. Earthy, tons of cereal character, lightly tangy yeast esters. Earthy chocolate. Lively bubbles, light tartness, fruity and dry. Estery finish. Weird beer. Not bad, but very strange.
