Bottle. Clear light copper with a creamy white head. A vigorous pour into my globe glass produces a four finger thick, amber tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a muddled amber color that shows a mostly clear, golden amber hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells quite fruit laden; lots of fresh plum, ripe apple, red table grapes, and a bright currant compote like note are all noticeable. This is backed by a toasted whole grain bread character, that provides a touch of nuttiness to round things out. As my nose gets used to things, the fruit character becomes more suggestive of citrusy hops and caramelized grain character.
Nicely bitter up front, which lingers through to the finish; the hop bitterness is well matched by the chewy, earthy, spicy grain character though. The grain spiciness especially lingers a bit in the long finish. Up front this has a ripe, caramelized, citrus zest hoppiness that combines well with a sweet, slightly nutty, wholesome, caramelized grain character. The body has a chewy, somewhat viscous heft to it that doesn’t get cloying, but is quite appropriate for a Barlywine.
This beer is nicely balanced by the earthy, spicy rye character, the sweet, caramelized grain notes, the bitter and citrusy hop notes, and to a lesser degree by the fruit leaning fermentation character. This should age nicely for at least a couple years. This is a more than serviceable beer, and a good choice on this cold, rainy, Tucson winter’s night.
A decent barleywine, nothing too memorable. Pours a nice Amber color with a white head. Smells of banana, green apple. Taste is simple but smooth, with some cream, vanilla, plums and green apple. Had in the bottle.

>> Clear light amber pour, good foam. Licorice, dates, fruitcake nose. Taste is slightly chemical, licorice, fairly bitter, brown sugar, mild orange peel balance, celery seed finish. No alcohol really, not too sticky, but the body doesn’t seem to distinguish this as barleywine from just Christmas amber ale.

750ml bottle from Craftbeerkings. Poured a deep amber with a smaller tight fizzy head of beige. Aroma/flavor of alcohol, molasses, dry caramel, waxy vanilla, honey sweetness. Appearance is very nice with huge, cream-colored, slow to settle head, lots of sticky lace, and a clear honey amber color. Aroma is immediately caramel malt, then wet grain, no hop. Flavor’s similar to nose, carbonic tang and malt is in front then some sweet which eventually brings in some bitter for a long bittersweet finish. Some booze at the end there too. Body is very good. Pour on tap at Woodman, hazy reddish pour with whitehead, aroma brought notes of caramel, toffee, slight herbal, floral notes into some rye, spice, touch of molasses, hints of orange as well. Taste was a mix of orange, rye, slight lemon, into nice molasses, caramel, toffee, finishing with some floral, herbal hops. Nice.
