Pours a nearly opaque dark mahogany with a thin-lacing tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark caramel malt and a hint of cinnamon toward a semi-tart finish. Body starts with a sweet dark caramel and spiced finish with light fruity tartness throughout. Finishes thinner and semi-tart with a hint of doughy yeast. Growler from the brewery last December, and somehow forgot to enter my notes until now. Dark purple-brown. Richly spiced aroma that does indeed have some similarities to mexican chocolate. Caramel and sharply spicy flavor. Finished a bit astringent. Started quite good, but by the end the spices were a bit heavy handed, and there wasn’t much chocolate flavor as advertised. Corked and caged 750 ml bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar ($6.99). Pours a nice deep dark brown-red with generous three fingers of foamy head. Strong aroma of "holiday" spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) along with weaker aromas of chocolate malt, anise, juniper, wood, and a hint of chili. Flavor is again dominated by the same "holiday" spices found in the nose. The chili taste is weak but there, but the chocolate and malt flavors are noticeably weak. Good carbonation but disappointing finish which is dominated by the spices yet again. This is a good idea -- I certainly enjoyed the Mexican hot chocolate I had when I visited Oaxaca in the winter. There in Mexico the rich chocolate, spice/cinnamon, and chili flavors comes together very well. This beer needs to tone down the spice while increasing the chili and especially the chocolate flavors.

Bottle thanks to footbalm. Pours a dark brown/red color with a large off-white head. A spicy nose; some pepper and allspice. 750 ml. bottle from Secret Santa. Thanks man! Pours a reddish amber brown pour with a medium off white head, sticky, clings to the glass. Aroma of clove, all spice, orange peel, caramel and toffee malts. Flavor of strong clove. Toffee malts, cinnamon, spice. Certainly the spice plays a big deal in this. Mild chocolate and caramel. Sample at Bruery Provisions. Pours a reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Sweet spices like ginger and allspice in the nose, plus a bit of malt. Medium body with flavors of cinnamon, ginger, bready malt and caramel. The finish is sweetly spiced with a malty aftertaste. November 30th, 2012 - I don’t recall the where, when and how this ale came into my possession, nor when I drank it, but the timing seems right. Any beer inspired by Mexican hot chocolate needs colder climes to bring out its true intentions. Perhaps due to coming fresh from the fridge, the aroma is blunted, quiet, and what little of it is there speaks of red grapes and overripe strawberries, amply sweet and full of fructose goodness. The taste is much more clearly that "Cup of Christmas Cheer" blend of flavors: tons of cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg, gingerbread and other things nice. The body is light, keeping all of these high-edge flavors at bay, and it ends with an especially celebratory finish of chili spiciness. This is a lot of flavors bundled into one ornate gift, and like so many suburban Christmas decorations, where there isn’t harmony, there’s volume and pizazz, and that’s what this beer has in spades.
