COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Days shorten and cold permeates everything, but the darkest time of the year also offers its treasures. Take Freedive, our India Black Ale. Freedive’s midnight color and roasty malt character belie its piney hop aroma, creating an unexpected combination. Freedive is a beer for winter, and like the snow and solitude, it will be gone before you realize.

ARH (1137) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 20, 2016
On tap, poured into an IPA glass. The aroma is grassy with a mild chocolate hint. It pours a clear, vibrant, oily dark red-brown with a creamy, tan head that has mild retention and lace. The taste is a medium / medium high bitter cut by a medium sweetness. The oily texture is accompanied by fizzy carbonation and a medium body. The flavor profile is mildly milk chocolate with grass qualities and a hint of molasses. The finish is crisp with a touch of bitter citrus peel blended with cola and grass. The aftertaste is lightly malty and slightly ashy and dry.

[Tap] Draught at the taproom. Opaque black in color with a nice looking beige head. Nose is of piney hops and deeply charred malts. Taste is of pine sap, earthy hops, ash, heavy roast and hints of licorice. Hop bitterness fades quickly into a semi-sweet mocha finish. Pretty good.

Nice smooth black IPA. Good balance of stout and IPA hop taste. I was surprised this was brewed in Evanston IL. This makes Evanston a less boring town. Very good black IPA.
