Mexicake^2 pretty much says it all. A great beer - made even better. The barrel aging adds both a subtlety and complexity that makes an already tasty beer a ‘to die for’ brew. ciocanelu (3190) - Timisoara, ROMANIA - FEB 10, 2018
Really dark brown color with tan head. Aroma has scotch whiskey, wood barrel, dusty basement, earthy spices. Taste has some caramel malt, some toffee but the wood takes over with whiskey and light butterscotch on the finish, light roasty bitterness, a hint of chili heat. Medium plus body, medium to low carbonation. It's a quite good imperial stout but the base beer idea is somehow lost to the wood barrel intensity. tombyars (1802) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 10, 2018
330ml bottle courtesy of Chris - cheers mate! Poured into a tulip glass and sampled on the 21st January 2018. Dull black in colour with a thin tan head. Strong malty aroma with complex notes of cacao, chilli oil, wood smoke and vanilla. Thin oily mouthfeel and poor lacing with just a light ring. Dark malts give a Pontefract base with sweet molasses, treacle toffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and spice flavours. Hint of black pepper noted in the brief spicy bitter aftertaste but always short lived. Finish is super smooth and malty with seductive warming notes of cognac, chilli heat is in this but not overpowering as one might expect from the chillies themselves! Cacao, vanilla, treacle fudge, ash and a light phenolic note which reminded me of Brewdog Paradox? A cracking Imperial Stout and highly recommended. Bottle picked up from Trafalgar Wines,
Brighton, Sussex and consumed at home Saturday 3rd February 2018 whilst cooking Chicken Rogan Josh from The Curry Guy cookbook. Pours black with a slim beige head. I get wood and a hint of bourbon on the nose, however I also get some mint which is something that I get in the mouth as well. It is a roasty full on beer with the usual indulgent smooth flavours coming into play, I get chocolate, but keep coming back to mint, drinking this alongside the standard version which I prefer. UPDATED: FEB 1, 2018 W aromacie wiśnie , likier, lekko alkoholowy, ale w przyjemny sposób. Trochę pralin.
Kolor czarny, czekoladowe przebłyski. Piana ciemnobeżowa, szybko redukuje się do obręczy.
W smaku z początku mało, potem kakao, przyprawy i intensywne chili dobrze rozgrzewające przełyk.

[ As Tempest Mexicake - Bourbon Barrel ].
Clear dark black brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, cake - vanilla, bourbon. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, cake - vanilla, dark malt, sweet malt, bourbon, roasted. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic.
33 cl bottle, served in snifter. Poured black with small half finger mocha tan head that dissipated quickly. Aroma: caramel, oak, chocolate, coffee, licorice, bourbon, dark fruit, vanilla. Taste: dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, salty licorice, bourbon, espresso, chilies, caramel fudge, umami/soy sauce, brown sugar, molasses, Cinnamon, dark fruit, raisins, dates, dried fruit, brownies. Medium to full body with a roasted bittersweet finish with a flare up from the chilies, although when compared to the standard version of Mexicake the chilies have died down a bit due to the barrel aging. Very good and quite complex brew. Barrel aging has made this an improvement from the standard Mexicake. Delicious stout...
