The Midnight IPA takes a traditional India Pale Ale, a hoppy high alcohol beer originally brewed in England in the 19th century, and adds a 21st century twist: its jet-black. Brewed using a new roasted wheat from America (called Midnight wheat, and giving our beer its name), this black IPA achieves its colour without most of the roasted flavours and aromas you would normally expect in such a dark beer. Our take on this new sub-style of IPA is as hoppy as they come. The aroma offers an explosion of piney resinous hops, achieved through multiple kettle and dry hopping charges of Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe. If you were to close your eyes, youd be convinced you were holding a highly hopped IPA from the Pacific Northwest. Its deceptively smooth and sessionable, so tread carefully.

Definitely an easy drinker. Bland when too cold but very worthwhile above 8c. Aroma some light grassy hop character with dark toffee. Flavour some cocoa and toasty notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours totally black with a brown head. Aroma is malt, fruit, roastiness and hints of pine. Taste is medium sweet leading to a dry roasty and fruity finish. Very impressed with this one!

Tasting at Bruces pad. Thanks to Leighton and Josh, Clear dark brown beer, small pale cream coloured head. Light pine and skunk hop nose. Smooth soft palate, airy. Mellow dark malts, semi dry. Touch of malt cream and even a trace of coffee. Hops follow the nose, mild skunk and pine. Semi dry finish. A light Black IPA.

Bottle, thanks to Leighton/Josh. It pours deepest brown with a thick beige head. The nose is pine, light sweetness, cola, treacle and cola bottle sweets. The taste is roasted malt, earth, toast, good level of bitterness, toast, dull coffee, pine and alcohol with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body, moderate+ carbonation and soft mouth-feel. A decent BIPA by all accounts.

Bottle at Bruces during the first stop of Jacks Farewell Tour in London. This one I got in a trade from Josh. Pours dark brown with a tight, creamy beige head. Nose has toasty pine, burnt toast, hints of grapefruit, some roast. Medium sweet flavor, more burnt toast, baking cocoa, moderate bitter earth, dry chocolate, burnt pine. Medium bodied with average, massaging carbonation. Finishes with sweet burnt toast, pine, dry dirt, light grapefruit, some bitter burnt wood. Nice beer.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours black with a short tan head. Big piney hop aroma, smells like a killer IPA. Taste is awesome, dark malts blended with a nice hop profile make for a complex and challenging style. Dark malts, chocolate, pine and a touch of light citrus. Great bitterness, great body, great beer.

This is an odd one. It looks great with a reasonable aroma, upfront it has a nice taste but it quickly deteriorates to become really bitter and unpleasant. Overall not the best Black IPA.

Pours the expected midnight black, although some reddish highlights can still be seen. Fluffy tan head with visible carbonation. Toasty malt and pine resin come through in the aromas. Pine resin and hoppy bitterness are to the fore on tasting, but this mellows out leaving a more rounded chocolate and malt flavours at the end, with just a hint of vanilla. This is a big but very well balanced black IPA. Very tasty indeed.

From a 500ml bottle on 21/1/2013. Pours a very dark amber with a medium to big tan head which disappears quickly. Has a pleasant pine hop aroma with some dark malts (particularly caramel) in the background. In the mouth, theres lots of sweet milk chocolate and caramel, which is set off against a big piny resiny hop finish, which features a touch of roastiness as well. The palate is quite creamy and the carbonation lively. A very good black IPA with heaps of character. Makes me proud to be an Aussie!
