The Midnight IPA takes a traditional India Pale Ale, a hoppy high alcohol beer originally brewed in England in the 19th century, and adds a 21st century twist: its jet-black. Brewed using a new roasted wheat from America (called Midnight wheat, and giving our beer its name), this black IPA achieves its colour without most of the roasted flavours and aromas you would normally expect in such a dark beer. Our take on this new sub-style of IPA is as hoppy as they come. The aroma offers an explosion of piney resinous hops, achieved through multiple kettle and dry hopping charges of Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe. If you were to close your eyes, youd be convinced you were holding a highly hopped IPA from the Pacific Northwest. Its deceptively smooth and sessionable, so tread carefully.

On tap at the brewery. Massive beer. Aromas of caramel, roasted coffee, liquorice, flowers, pine, hints of vanilla. Taste is mostly bitter, with very long length. Palate is silky, and medium bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

Pours totally black with a brown head. Aroma is malt, fruit, roastiness and hints of pine. Taste is medium sweet leading to a dry roasty and fruity finish. Very impressed with this one!

Poured black with a light brown head. Tropical fruit notes with a big roast background. Nice. Heavy roast that turned to nail polish remover. Harsh bitterness. Could not finish as was overwhelming undrinkable. Pitty as nose and first sips were good ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From a 500ml bottle on 21/1/2013. Pours a very dark amber with a medium to big tan head which disappears quickly. Has a pleasant pine hop aroma with some dark malts (particularly caramel) in the background. In the mouth, theres lots of sweet milk chocolate and caramel, which is set off against a big piny resiny hop finish, which features a touch of roastiness as well. The palate is quite creamy and the carbonation lively. A very good black IPA with heaps of character. Makes me proud to be an Aussie!

(Bottle) Beautiful looking beer - opaque almost black with large dense tan head. Lovely hoppy aroma with grapefruit, pine and some floral hints. Palate is lighter than you might expect for such a dark beer, having medium body nice fine carbonation. The flavour is also lighter than appearance leads you to expect, but is in no way lacking. This is a hoppy beer, but not over the top in bitterness. The flavour starts with a balance of roasty and tangy notes before the hoppy bitterness rapidly develops for a reasonable bitter finish. An unusual and very nice beer.

500ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a medium light tan head, which lasts fairly well and leaves good lacing. The aroma is an enticing blend of aggressive pine resin and grapefruit hops with dark, nutty malt notes. Powerful grapefruit hops up front mix with a milder hint of pine needles before giving way to bitter coffee and roasty malt. A touch of cocoa appears towards the finish, which is dominated by pine needle hops. A decent black IPA.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with dense light tan coloured head. Plenty of lacing as it falls away to all except the thinnest film. Aromas show lots of sweet caramel and plenty of suggary sweetness. Hops show through as sour oranges. A little roasted grain brings it all together. Nice. Taste is dominated by resiny hop bitterness with only the some feint sweetness upfront. Finish is dominated by hop resins which hang around for ages. Medium mouthfeel. Nive beer.

Bottle. Very dark brown, almost black, with a creamy tan head. Aroma has powdery chocolate, musk, pine and assorted flowers. Light body with soft, tingly carbonation and a lengthy bitter finish. Flavour has grapefruit, lime, apricot, pine and coffee. Low on roastiness, the hops are all over this beer, and it works very well. Very nice and quite sessionable.
