Draught at Rose and Raindrop, Portland. Brownish amber. Aroma of grapefruit and lychee. Sweet and very hoppy, dominated by juicy grapefruit. There’s enough malt to back the hops, but still leave them on free display. Megabitter finish. On tap for Hard Liver ’12, pours an opaque orangey dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of candied sugar, caramel, twizzlers - very sweet. Flavour is syrupy with caramel sweetness, no hop presence, just lots of sweetness. Palate is syrupy thick with an almost cloying sweetness. Quite nice but overly sweet. Deep golden colour. Rich pale malts with slashing peach fruit esters. Sweet, fruity with hints of alcohol...just hints...until late when it becomes a bit more prominent, offering dryness to this rich malty concoction. Draft at Uber. Pours cloudy, rubied medium amber. Thinnish but dense moussy off-white head. Big sweet nose: cookie dough, caramel, graham cracker, toffee. Medium body, light carb. Slickish, kinda sweet and twangy but still palatable (actually, as the glass wears on, the twang gets much more overbearing). 2003: Hazy ruby color with little head and light lacing. Nose of aged hops, bright fruits and creamy sweet malts. The flavor is balanced, the sweetness offsets any alcohol feel there is. Very nice barleywine. Spicy, smooth, subtle, very eligant but with a burley PNW hop perfume.
6 ounce sample on tap at Beveridge Place Pub. Sweet, fruity, and vinous aroma. Nicely aromatic. Transparent garnet-amber colored body with a small, off-white head. Starts sweet, sugary, and caramelly. Nice malt character. Light roastiness in the middle, before this finishes with more sweetness and vinousness. Really tasty and easy-drinking. 2002 vintage on tap at the Portland Barleywine Long Haul Tour. Pours a hazy brown with a fast falling off-white head. Lots of warm caramel in the aroma along with a big prune or raisin sweetness behind it. This barleywine had a really doughy/bready taste that gave it substantial weight on the palate, lots of warming sweetness up front which kept getting better and better as this brew warmed up. This is a bit of a flimsy barleywine, kind of sweet, lamost to the point of cloying when it warms, with lots of rich toffee and caramelzied brown candi sugar notes. Tons of fruitiness, that does it best to mask the alcohol, but has a tendency to fail, as the burn fills your palate. Very NWern style BW and overhopped. Pours a copper orange with scarcely any head but instead a thick lacing of tiny white foam. The aroma of candied grapefruit and rich caramel is lovely, but the hops cut too hard and the palate burns way-hot, leaving what seem to be a very nice set of malt flavors and complexities so thoroughly outmatched that I’m having a hard time appreciating what doubtless are the finer, more subtle aspects of the flavor.
Maybe with a few more years on it, this one would be nice. Now, it’s too heavily hopped and the alcohol needs time to mellow.
Cloudy. Sweet and sticky flavours and aromas. Plenty of estery fun but over-all I found this one a little too sickly and boozy.
