For Terrapin’s 14th year anniversary we thought we would celebrate with a Tart Belgian Red Ale. Brewed with copious amounts of crystal malts for a majestic red color, and fermented with Lactobacillus and a Belgian yeast strain for an acidic and spicy finish, this anniversary ale is one to appreciate all year long.

22 oz beer pours a red color with a small white head. Aromas of yeast, oak, caramel, sweet malt, cherry. Medium bodied, nicely balanced, a nice beer.

Terrapin’s Belgian-style Sour Red is a funky, tart beer with horse blanket, oak, and caramel notes. The Lacto doesn’t punch the sides of your mouth like some Sour Reds, but it is noticeably acidic. The cherry character is surprisingly sweet. The malt is actually fairly starchy, too. I tend to like even more sourness, but this is a nice Anniversary release for Terrapin.

Lots of caramel and some cherry.

Aroma is caramel and tart. Aroma complex. Flavor is water and light tart and cherry. Very simple. So a whole pint may build. Interesting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a thin tan head. Aroma of cherries, yeast and a hint of oak. Flavor was lightly sweet and tart with cherries, oak, yeast, berries and had some light spiciness.

Was hoping for better, but have been disappointed repeatedly by Terrapin as of late. This one just doesn’t work. Sour notes are off and ends up being odd and funky in all the bad ways. Watery and insipid. Not much of a finish. Sweet notes of cherry and cola and an odd artifical vanilla essence. Meh. Meh.

A funky aroma of cheese and metallic shavings. Pours a reddish orange color with a short lasting off white well laced head. A watery body with a taste of mineral and cheese a disappointing weak tart finish that dissipates too quickly.

Poured from a bottle. Medium clear Amber color, medium short lived off white head. Dusty metallic aroma. Light body with an initial fruit tart flavor that dissipates quickly into a watery finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg at Beer Run, 5/29/16. Hazy orange thin creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of bready malt, caramel, cherries, mild yeast. The taste is tart cherries, bready malt, spice. Medium bodied, mild lingering tartness.
