Beautiful dark red color, starts off smooth and malty on the palate but finishes sharp and dry. tinydancer (52) - Gibsonville, North Carolina, USA - JAN 27, 2006
Amber brown in color. Slightly hazy translucent. Small head. Aroma is rich of cascade hops, pine, grapefruit, caramel, plum. Palate is smooth. Not heavy on carbonation. Flavor is sweet and lightly malty. Slight smokiness. Hops are in effect here. The hops don’t smack you in the face, but this beer is IIPA for sure. It reminds me a great deal of 90 min IPA in that the flavor is very rich and sweet, almost syruppy. However, it is heavier on the malt than a 90 mintue. It is almost like a light imperial stout with hops gallore. This is a very good beer and I am glad to have found it. in the mountians of NC. ononews9 (52) - Hanover, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 23, 2010
a rather heavy beer with a slightly strong flavor of molasses. a decent dark beer. doppelmeup (51) - Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA - APR 30, 2008
I was very pleasantly surprised by this beer. I bought a four pack for a trade, and had a couple left so I decided sample one of these higly rated brews for myself.
Listed on BA as a double IPA, I was expecting a bright orange grapefruit/pine/hop bomb. I don’t think this style is correct for this beer. The label describes it as an Imperial Red Ale, and this is right on the money.
The beer pours a dark amber red into a pint glass with a rich, thick head that slowly fades and leaves great lacing all the way doen the glass.
Aromas are full of cut grass and chocolate malt. A strong rye presence and some citrus balance this out. Very multidimensional.
The taste is absolutely awesome! There are so many flavors it’s hard to list them all. Chocolate, rye, spicy hops, fruity. Very hoppy yes, but definitely not a hop bomb. This is one of the best beers I’ve had!
Mouthfeel is both hoppy and dry and slick and malty at the same time. The high ABV is completely hidden.
Overall, this is one of the best beers I’ve had. It just screams DRINK ME! Don’t pass this by if you see it on the shelves!

Had this from a bottle, beer is nice and dark, and had a fair amount of head and is not as hoppy as I would expect, but still a good beer.

Hoppy aroma. Red in appearence with large heavy head. Hoppy aftertaste but still malts are there. Not too bad. hoppymeal (38) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - MAY 13, 2007
Pours brown to dark ruby red with a good size tan head. Smell is predominantly caramel malt sweetness with a little piney hop smell in the background, sweet floral aroma also. Taste is also fairly sweet with the hops creating a mildly bitter finish. Medium body. I could feel the alcohol doing it’s job, but there was no discernible alcohol in the taste. The beer was overall very drinkable for me, although I definitely didn’t think of it as a hop monster. Instead it was quite balanced, leaning a bit more to the malty side. This could be due to the fact that this is a 2005. Doesn’t say exactly when in 05, but maybe the hops have mellowed if it was the earlier part of the year. This didn’t detract from the beer’s quality for me however, just different then my expectations from the label.

This stuff is GREAT. Aroma hops. Taste Hops. Finish Hops. Not quite a Double Dog but brought out the hop monster in me. Color was superior, body was nice and full. Try this beer. ObsceneOne (32) - Tampa, Florida, USA - MAR 24, 2007
This is Beer. Deerp red in color, strong hops in the nose with a deep bitty flavor. It is a great beer. thebirdshow (27) - Burlington, North Carolina, USA - FEB 13, 2006
Nice redish amber color. Poured a brownish white head with a great glaze. Smelled very fresh of grapefuit and hops. Rich malt, carmel, and hoppy taste. Full bodied and an all around great beer for me.
