An especially bright, hoppy take on Belgian IPA, Monk’s Revenge is another scary member of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour series. This particular version was aged in cabernet barrels from North Carolina’s Shelton Vineyards. Righteous.

Pours a golden reddish with fizzy head. Aromas of fruit, grass, and yeast. Flavors of grass, wine notes, damn tasty...

Rosy pour with nice white head. Nail polish remover, dill and dry wine grapes. Strange take on the monks revenge. Not my favorite.

Draft at Chruchkey. Hazy amber color, medium white head. Aroma has vanilla, slight medicine and herbs. Taste is rich smooth vanilla and fresh fruit. Decent.

4oz pour at Churchkey DC. Pours a hazy amber with some thick, creamy white head. Nose is huge with nail polish, fusel alcohol, some peach brandy, some port, a little candlewax. Flavor is better, a big raw wood character, saw dusty, peach brandy, candy sugar, orange peel, some cheap chardonnay. Big, bright, woody finish.

Bottle at RBWG ’13 Grand tasting. Pours a slightly hazy bright orange golden color with a small white head. The aroma strong cab barrel, floral notes, Belgian yeast, and some fruitiness. The flavor was more cab barrel, caramel and toasted malts, floral notes, spicy at times with a general fruit character. There is quite a bit of the Cab barrel, but everything didn’t seem to come together very well.

Draft. Pours reddish orange with little to no head. Aroma is orange, lemon zest, booze. Taste is complicated - some grape/savory wine notes from the Cab, some barrel/woody notes, sweetness from the belgian yeast. Too much going on here for me. Definitely too "hot" off the tap. Still, I kept sipping...

Lightly hazy gold, white head. Tap at huna day. Odd mix of hops, winey notes, wet oak, caramel. Not harmonious.
