The Terrapin Hop Karma Brown IPA is a head on collision between a hoppy west coast India Pale Ale and a malty, complex brown ale. Brewed with 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts, this hybrid style represents the best of both worlds. PEACE, LOVE and HOPPINESS

A very dark brown with light brown head. Tasty, full of hop bitterness, but not as strong on the nose. Easy to drink, a nice IPA that is not to high in ABV.

Bottle. Dark Brown in colour. Malty; roast sweet malts, caramel, toffee, chocolate. Fruity; grapefruit citrus. Hoppy; piney and earthy hops. Nice Malt/Hop balance. Bitter hoppy and roast sweet malty. Interesting beer. (2009-10)

This beer has some funk. It is brown color with some hoppy IPA karma boost that is enlighting.

Old rating. Brown with reddish tint. Has big piney, grapefruit hop bite over a nutty, roasty, and chocolately body. Pretty decent stuff.

Bottle. Super toffee and light hop aroma. Nutty caramel taste with a dry bitter hoppy finish. Pretty good.

chinchill (5339) - South Carolina, USA - SEP 20, 2014
12 oz. bottle served in pint glass. [From 2011 notes].

The aroma, appearance and flavor of this beer are exactly what one should hope for if a brewer successfully combined the styles of brown ale and IPA.

A - This pours a clear but very dark reddish brown with a nice tan head.

S - The aroma intrigues more than entices, but does say "brown IPA".

The taste is wonderful, at least if you like both of these beer styles. A rich, hoppy, well-balanced beer with a substantial and complex malt component. IBU =65.

Well done!

Transfer from BA review on 9-18-12-
Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a deep brown colored brew with a one finger white head. The head faded relatively fast to leave a light level of lacing.

Smell – A sweeter and roasty aroma are most prevalent. The sweet in the nose is of a caramel, light chocolate and molasses smell, with the roasted noted being of a brown bread nature with a note of coffee. Overall, it is a lighter but pleasant aroma none the less.

Taste- A roasted malt and more herbal hop flavor greet the tongue. These are complimented by a lighter chocolate and molasses flavor. The sweetness grows in strength toward the middle of the taste as flavors of caramel join the molasses and chocolate flavor initially present. As the flavor advances further toward the end some bitter hop notes of an earthy and grapefruit citrus come to the taste and leave a semi-sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the lighter to medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is just a tad above average. It is a little to light in body and too high in carbonation for the dark and chocolate flavors. With this said though it is by no means bad.

Overall – A pretty easy drinking brew with a decent blend between hop, roast, and sweet. All are somewhat subdued, but in concert, they work fairly well.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a average tan head. Malty aroma with pine, roasted malts and caramel. Flavor of roasted malts, pine, mild citrus, caramel and had some nuttiness with a long and bitter finish.

DocJitsu (2040) - Pensacola, Florida, USA - MAR 10, 2014
Pours a cola brown with a two-finger root beer head. Nicely balanced hop and malt nose. Slick texture with some scrub on the rear of the palate. Very well-balanced flavors of sweet malt and bitter, yet clean hop. Quaffable.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade. Consumed 3/13/13.
The pour has a dark brown color and leaves the same colored body slightly clear around the edges, two finger off white foamy head gently recedes and leaves some spider web foamy lacing in the wake.
The smell has the hops up front, subdued malts trying to get through but mostly stays underneath the hops, gets slightly nutty as it warms
The taste is bittersweet through a nice combination of hops to malts, slightly nutty.
The palate is about medium on the body, comes across sessionable, and has a slightly sweet aftertaste and a sticky finish.
Overal, whether an American Brown Ale or an American IPA, I like it for the most part, good example of a hybrid between the two that I would have again.
