COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapins Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasnt enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience thats electrifying!

12oz bottle poured into snifter. Pours a nice dark amber/brown with a 1/4" thick head. Aroma is of vanilla, caramel malt and obvious oak, along with a resinous hops profile. Taste is leaning more on the sweetish end, but there is sime medium, well-blended bitterness in there too. Texture is slick/a tad oily, with low carbonation. Overall, a good brew to try and sip over the course of maybe 30mins or so. Not a favorite, but still a pretty good choice. I have to confess that this is my first terrapin, and I actually bought it because I love turtles (I own four)...!

Toffee colored pour. Very dark and rich looking. Small off-white head. Little bit of lacing. Huge vanilla aroma with a peppery wood note. Taste is caramel and hops with plenty of malty backbone. Very tasty. Creamy and smooth with just a hint of bitterness at the back.

Growler - Poured brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma of vanilla and caramel. The flavor found caramel, oak, light roast, and light hop. Medium to full body, and a roasted malt aftertaste.

A- Pours a brown but when held up to light you can see the reddish hue of this beer. Has a light tan head that dissipates after awhile. S- Oak,Hops, and some caramel malts T- Caramal malts with a nice oak background M- Thin with solid carbonation O- Theres a lot going on here but its well balanced and not over powering in any 1 area.

On tap at Brewers Pizza. Amber red pour with a nice khaki head. Light hops, lots of rich caramel, touches of vanilla and toast. The flavor is much the same, much caramel and a bit of oak and hop. A touch too sweet.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a dark brown color. Somewhat typical of most amber ales, the head has a one finger offwhite shade with a wonderful creaminess to it. It fades away to a thin collar fairly quick, but leaves nice sheets of lacing down the glass. S: This one is somewhat intriguing, to say the least. The first thing I note is aged piny hops along side a large caramel backbone. When given a chance to open up, the aroma shifts slightly toward vanilla, toffee, oak, and chocolate. Hints of booze also appear. T: At first, mild hints of hops hit the palate...and when I mean mild, I mean nearly non-existent to my hop-discerning palate. The finish is fairly sweet vanilla mixed with some toffee. To me, the general flavor profile is hard to identify - it comes across as a weird, almost musty caramel sweetness. Theres too much flavor muddling here for me to give a great score. M: I like the creaminess of the texture a lot. Its a bit thin, and oaky tannins boost its drinkability at the cost of some softness. Carbonation is a touch low. O: Not bad, just strange. The absolute closest comparison I can make to this is a 4-month old bottle of Nugget Nectar crossed with Oaked Arrogant Bastard. I wouldnt seek this out again, but I wouldnt refuse it, either.

Not a big boost of oak in the aroma and a very balanced oak hoppy taste with a thick brown appearance and growing finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2012 vintage, 12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours amber with a small light head. Nose is pine, oak, caramel sweetness, fruit, great aromas. Taste is not as bitter and hoppy as I expected. Very well balanced.

Bottle. Pours a clear and bright dark ruby body with a small fizzy beige head that fell to a wispy partial covering. The nose is full of resiny hops with a much heavier oak character than I was expecting. Theres a really hefty sweet malt base as well. The flavor is pretty intense, the resiny hops, heavy caramel, and oak fight for dominance. The sweetness and bitterness express themselves up front, leaving the raw oak to take over on the finish. The flavor is pretty good, but the heaviness of it doesnt make it especially drinkable. Thick and chewy with fizzy carbonation, lingering sticky finish. Decent enough, but not something Id go back and buy more of to drink regularly.
