COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapin’s Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasn’t enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience that’s electrifying!

Lots of malt in this. Oak is there and I guess the aging kills the hops. Pours cloudy reddish with good head and lacing. Works to highlight malt. Thanks to GenDV138 for a taste of this at Churchkey.

drowland (8744) - Georgia, USA - JUL 29, 2013
On tap at Brewer’s Pizza. Amber red pour with a nice khaki head. Light hops, lots of rich caramel, touches of vanilla and toast. The flavor is much the same, much caramel and a bit of oak and hop. A touch too sweet.

On tap at the Mellow Mushroom in Tampa. Pours darker than the non BA version due to the leaching of barrel qualities. It was mahogany with tan head. The aroma was a pleasing combination of tangelo, orange juice, a background of malt sweetness, oak, singed caramel and vanilla. Very nice aromatic balance that reduces the will to wait any longer for that first sip. The taste is very much the same with meaty juicy citrus hops coming from orange, tangelo and sugar coated grapefruit wedges. As soon as you take a moment to ponder the hoppiness a nearly equal strength wave of oak, maple syrup and vanilla meet up with a backbone of sweet malts and take the experience to closure. Lovely balance between the base beer and the barrel notes. Very nice.

PorterPounder (7970) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - DEC 18, 2012
Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper with a sticky off-white head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Fresh fragrant aroma with some bubble gum accents, some cherry notes. Flavor is full bodied and bold with some roasted accents, some vanilla, a bit of nuttiness, and some back end booziness. Mouthhfeel has a nice thickness to it. Pretty decent.

FROTHINGSLOSH (7796) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 4, 2014
Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a plum-brown color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was toffee, pine, resin and leather. The flavor was bitter with a sour caramel note, toffee, wood, smoke, fig, pine, resin, leather and noted alcohol. Long finish of toffee, caramel, fig, resin, leather and booze. Moderately full bodied. Pretty tasty.

Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 19, 2012
Bottled. Poured clear, deep garnet with a toasted beige head. The aroma picked up lots of oak and very juicy fruits (apricots, pear, and pineapple).. peppery accents.. warm and welcoming. The flavor found sweet, but alcohol-fueled fruits and a touch of molasses at the core.. fruit, black pepper, and rye bitterness plus lots of toasty oak around.. picked up some tasty vanilla on the finish.. aggressive and very oaky, but it worked. Medium-bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. buttery feel on the middle.. a little hot at times. Overall this was worth the drink.
