Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapin’s Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasn’t enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience that’s electrifying!

Tap. Pours dark transparent amber with slight off white head. Very interesting aroma, very floral hops and definite citrus hints. Taste of oranges and hoppiness with undercurrents of oak.

beechner224 (1024) - Melbourne, Florida, USA - NOV 2, 2013
Bottle. Pours amber with nice white head. Aroma is mix of vanilla, malt, and hops. Taste really smooth, nice vanilla flavor up front. Finishes slightly bitter sweet. Really nice.

Brewdork (228) - Sanford, Florida, USA - OCT 29, 2013
Pours hazy red with the thinnest of tan heads. Grassy aromas with notes of oak. Outstanding complex flavor with a fine balance of malt, hops, and wood. Despite its big flavor, it’s never overbearing and remarkably drinkable for a 10.6% brew.

DrewFace (969) - Melbourne, Florida, USA - OCT 27, 2013
Pours a brown color with huge off white head. Oak right up front in the nose accompanied by some vanilla character, very mild hop aroma. Flavor is huge on the oak, some vanilla, caramel malt, and very boozy. Quite thick mouthfeel.

S_Side_Smitty (776) - Lakeland, Florida, USA - OCT 23, 2013
Pours brown with a small light tan head. Aroma is pine and some faint ’woodsy’ oak. Taste is hoppy pine first followed by muted chocolate malts. Compared to the Big Hoppy Monster, everything is definitely more subtle. The oak makes itself known from the mid palate to the finish.....it’s a different cat compared to the other.....maybe a little more refined.?

sharkweek (120) - Statesboro, Georgia, USA - OCT 22, 2013
Beer pours dark amber with two fingers of light cream colored head. Scent is sweet and the taste is amazing. Oak age comes through heavy. This beer has some complexity and is easily the best Terrapin beer I have had to date.

Fritz123 (1535) - Boca Raton, Florida, USA - OCT 20, 2013
Draft at the Syb Pig in Boca Raton. Snifter. Deep amber red with thick head. Serious lacing. Very oaked on the nose with caramel, sugar malts and leather. Taste is similar with oak, leather, sweet malts, caramel, and spices. Oily, but smooth. Great oaked and slight booze finish. Very good.

Elwood (3336) - Leesburg, Virginia, USA - OCT 19, 2013
Serving: Draft at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours a deep ruddy color with a thin white head. The aroma was somewhat dull. A little wood, caramel, and a slightly stale hop note. Heavy wood on the tongue. A combination of the wood aging and high abv results in a plastic taste that just doesn’t work for me. Smooth on the palate with lower carbonation and a lingering bitter finish. A bit difficult to finish off.

Dr_Fellini (1020) - Norfolk, Virginia, USA - OCT 18, 2013
Bottle to glass. Pours a cloudy light brown mahogany color with a thin light brown head. Aroma is quite complex, with hints of oak, vanilla, roasted caramel, and cinnamon. Oak flavor is more prominent in the taste, with a heavy roasted sweetness. Light in body for such a big beer with a lingering cinnamon cereal flavor in the finish. Tasty indeed.

Butters (4063) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - OCT 13, 2013
Near clear amber brown with small ring of offwhite head. Caramel, toasty, vanilla nose. Surprisingly not very boozy on the aroma, but it does show up on the flavor. Definitely oaky, but smooth, not harsh. Big malty boozy body. Kinda like a barleywine, but not as fruity or sweet. A bit of a harsh woody bite on the finish. Ends hot. Really Good, but not great.
