Boom ShakaLager is the next installment in Terrapin’s “Side Project” series of beers. This Imperial Lager is made exclusively with German malts, German hops and a true Bavarian lager yeast strain.
While 99% of the beers brewed at Terrapin are ales, we figured we should show some love to the lager style as well. Not that this off-beat, big beer is going to be brewed to a traditional style or anything.

Light amber appearance with a thin white head. Aroma is slightly yeasty and slightly hoppy. Flavor is a little hoppy but not too strong. Strong malt backbone and slightly sweet in the finish. Overall, strong offering from Terrapin.

Found a couple bottles of this blast from the past laying around, side project 11. Pours a clear golden brown with bubbly off-white head that dissipates to leave moderate lace, surprising amount of carbonation still. Aroma and taste of sweet malty hints over fruity yeast notes. Hint of oxidation, but actually minimal. Not too bad.

Bomber. Pours a muddy brown, burnt orange color with a very quick dissipating head. Nose is very sugary with sweet caramel and toffee. Taste is grainy and a wee bit tart, with hints of grass, and bread alonmg with caramel. Finishes on a dry note and on the same notes. Terrapin ...stay with you ales. Quaff Score 6 / 10

Pours a amber gold with an off white head and sweet malty, caramel aroma. Taste is sweet, strong malty flavor with caramel, grains, and bread notes leading to a sweet, malty, slight bitter finish.

Bottle pours clear orange brown with thick yellow head. Sweet malty aroma. taste matches aroma - very sweet, malty, a little grassy. Mild but prolonged bitter after taste. Palate a little syrupy. I kept this refrigerated but may have been past its prime. Too sweet for me and I like sweet beers.

DiarmaidBHK (6151) - Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 8, 2013
Bottle from Greenville Beer Exchange. Pours dark orange with a thin khaki head that leaves some lacing. A bit of floral on the nose. Bog and boozy on the tongue. Burns a bit going down. Wasn’t feeling this one.

wlajwl (7212) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - JAN 25, 2013
Aroma is strong malts and fruit, somewhat similar to a barley-wine. The flavor is caramel/toffee, malts, fruit, a hint of earthiness and a mildly hoppy finish.

Maltajo (330) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 17, 2012
Bomber bottle from a trade with Dchmela. NIce deep golden pour with a big head! Very flavorful with grapefruit hops spices and barley all with incredible balance. This one was worth waiting for! thanks Dchmela!

Bomber, cloudy orange red color. Very sweet, lots of malts and caramel -- almost syrupy. Bitter hops come through on the finish, but it could be balanced better -- almost feels like drinking two beers, one that is really sweet chased by one that is really bitter. Not enough harmony between the two competing flavors. Also, seems somewhat hot - can really taste the alcohol. Not a big fan of this one.

Strong notes of malt on this amber colored imperial pilsner. The malt show the sweetness as well as the the deep abv. The finish gives a sense of bitter hops.
